🥀🗡 THORNWOOD 🗡🥀

Thorny shrubs and brambles have long and storied mythological and folklore origins. Sleeping Beauty's wall of brambly roses. The spindle and the needle. Rapunzel's prince blinded by the thorny hedge girdling the tower. In all of these stories, thorns embody the balance between beauty and defense. In Celtic stories, both the blackthorn & hawthorn are considered thresholds to the Otherworld, fiercely guarded by fairies. The hedgewitch who can only be accessed by crossing the brambly hedge that marks the boundary between civilization (the known world) and the deep, dark, and dangerous woods beyond (where unknown dangers & potential death lurk). These stories collectively tell us that life has teeth and to mind your boundaries.

The thorn symbol has long represented strength, resilience, and the protective power of nature. In nature, thorns serve as a natural defense mechanism, protecting plants from harm and ensuring their survival. Have you ever seen the thorns on a honey locust or a trifoliate orange? They're vicious and copious - it's even said that a hedgerow of trifoliate orange can stop a moose! Our thorny plant allies stand as living barriers, both in the physical sense and a spiritually symbolic one.

Our Thornwood bars feature mesmerizing green-gray swirls topped with a dramatic black and white swirled top. We've scented this one in one of our most beloved woodsy blends! An enchanting blend of orange zest and muddled blackberries, accented by spicy clove and cinnamon and the spicy/sweet twang of anise. The unexpected, yet exhilarating, sharp contrast of black spruce in the heart of this scent casts us deep into the shadows of the forest. The smooth finish of sandalwood, musk, and vetiver offers comfort and balance. Moody & magnetic!

🌳🌲 DRYAD 🌲🌳

In ancient Greek mythology, the forests were alive with spirits - tree spirits, known as dryads, and other nature spirits, freely inhabited every part of our natural world - ancient beings whose lives were intertwined with the forests they called home. Dryads were (generally female) nature nymphs who were closely connected to the woods, groves, and forests, and the life growing within them, specifically the trees. They were not simply guardians of the forest; they were the souls of the trees themselves. While the tree flourished, so did its resident nymph, but when it died she, too, passed away. Some dryads could wander freely through the forest, but some were bound to a single tree their entire existence. Each trunk might shelter an unseen spirit, watching quietly from beneath the bark, listening to the wind pass through her leaves.

The forest was never an empty place waiting to be conquered by man. It was always an ancient living, breathing entity. Watching. Remembering. We must always and forever respect nature and our beloved Mother Gaia.

Our first woodgrain design in years! Seriously, one of the most satisfying designs to pour as a soapmaker. Our Dryad bars boast a warm palette of woodsy browns, coppers, rusts, and a denim blue hue. We've scented Dryad in one of our newest favorites - a warm, welcoming blend that we can't get enough of lately! This one is an invitation to pause, reflect, and embrace the beauty of balance and simple comfort. Velvety woods, smooth sandalwood, and cedarwood smoke anchor the woodsy aspects here. The warm heart of cinnamon, carrot seed, ambrette, and cardamom adds a warm, lingering spiced energy that lingers, leaving a trail that is long-lasting, refined, and unmistakably sophisticated. The smoky, earthy richness will wrap you in endless comfort.

🌳🌲🌳🌲
When you need to let off some steam, when the world gets to be too much, when the horrors of our current society overwhelm you - go to the trees. Wrap your arms around the trunk of your favorite tree (the older, the better), visit your favorite grove, and whisper to the dryads what ails you. Tell them what's being done to their brethren around the world. Tell them all about those who would see our sacred lands destroyed and harvested for profit. Tell them everything that hurts your heart and soul. Your message will travel, root to root, crown to crown, through the mycelium network, and in the whispers of the leaves on the breeze. Trust in the magick of the forest. Your message will be heard. The dryads are always listening.

🌳🌲 FOREST BATH 🌲🌳

“They give off such hints of gladness. I would almost say that they save me, and daily.”
-American Poet Mary Oliver, on trees

Forest bathing is the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, a therapeutic form of nature healing that simply encourages people to spend more time in nature (bath not required!). Behind this practice is something more than a simple walk in the woods, though - it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being fully immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest. The concept was first developed by Japanese scientists in the 1980's and the science holds up today. The initial results showed that two hours of mindful exploration in a forest could reduce blood pressure, lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and improve concentration and memory. Spending time in nature and actively being present with your experience is truly healing to the human body on multiple levels. So get out there and find a quiet sit-spot to absorb all the beauty of the forest. No devices, no earpods, no running, no specific timetable or mileage to flaunt.... nothing but you and the trees.

Our Forest Bath bars display a rich, forest green base with thread-like whispers of black and white swirls. We've topped each bar with a touch of black lava salt and a dash of shimmery biodegradable glitter. A heart of aromatic sage and cypress nestle under top notes of bright spruce and sparkling bergamot to create a soothing atmosphere. The dark base of palo santo and patchouli meld with musk and smoke for a grounding finish. Captivating and cleansing!

In the age of disconnection, forgetting,
isolation, collapse
and AI

We need to listen
More and more
To the old old stories
ancestral oral tales
Wondertales folktales
Myths and fairytales

They are seasoned with the vernacular of place
And the animist imagination:
Migrating swans
Women becoming foxes
Tattered cloaks
And cloaks embroidered with 10,000 secrets
By the grandmothers hands

Fairytales and bones know truths.
Listen.
To the tellers in your marrow
The tales in stones
The stories in the moss
The lore in the rivers
The soft remembering in dawn’s waking quaking

Hold them close.
Listen.
They carry the Wild remembering old ways
True ways
The way of shifting shapes
and shape shifting
The way of the moon.

They’ll season you
with their remembering song.
Simmer you in their nutritious soil soul
Return you to yourself. Spit spat spout, changed
They’ll Spirit you
And dirt you with
Feathers. Roots.
And the truth of mystery.

As soon as you glimpse it, she leaps. Story Changes.
Rearranges. Bounds. Leaps like a fawn.

Follow her. Into the mist.
Or the liminal. Beyond this kingdom.
With its brick by brick
material cinderblock truth.

There is more.

Story is an outcast. A misfit.
A magician. A hag.
A wild green eyed hare
Waiting at the edge of the world.

Wondering. Wandering.
With a handful of threads.
One is yours.

Grab it
before she hands it to someone else.
