💜 It’s WINS WEDNESDAY, and we have something special to celebrate!

This week’s win is about growth, impact, and another opportunity to pour into the nursing community.

🎤 I’m excited to share that I’ll be speaking at the CNCA Experience 2026!

As a Director of Nursing, you spend so much of your time developing your team, solving problems, supporting others, and helping everyone around you grow.

But sometimes, you need space to think about your own growth, too.

The CNCA Experience 2026 is a two-day, live online experience for nurses, nurse coaches, and healthcare professionals who want to explore what may be possible beyond the traditional bedside role.

For my fellow DONs and nurse leaders, you don’t have to be planning a major career change to benefit from being in this room.

Maybe you have an idea you’ve been thinking about.
Maybe you’re curious about what else you can do with your years of nursing and leadership experience.
Or maybe you simply want to learn from other healthcare professionals who have taken their expertise in new directions.

Sometimes, one new conversation can help you see possibilities you hadn’t considered before.

And that’s why being invited to speak at this experience is such a meaningful Wins Wednesday for us. It’s another opportunity to represent DON leadership, share what we’ve learned, and bring our community into rooms where new possibilities are being discussed. 💜

📅 September 10 & 11, 2026
💻 100% Online + Live
🎟️ General Admission: $47

I’d love to see some of my DON community there with me!

DONs, you do NOT want to miss this conversation.

What happens when everyone expects you to fix everything… but no one realizes you’re drowning too?

Understaffed.
Undertrained.
Under-supported.
Overwhelmed.
And still expected to lead the entire nursing department.

This needs to be talked about.

In Episode 12 of Real Talk with DONs, Michelle Carter is getting REAL about what so many Directors of Nursing experience behind closed doors and why getting the right support can change everything.

👀 This is just the trailer. Don’t miss the FULL conversation.

💜 A new newsletter is officially LIVE!

This week, we’re talking about something every Director of Nursing and long-term care leader needs to think about:

Retention Doesn’t Start With Recruitment. It Starts With the DON.

We can keep hiring.
We can keep posting open positions.
We can keep asking why good employees leave.

But if we’re not looking at leadership, culture, communication, and the support our teams experience every day, we may be missing an important part of the retention conversation.

And there’s another question we need to ask:

Who is supporting the DON while the DON is trying to support everyone else?

I’m unpacking it all in this week’s edition of The Leader Behind the DON Title.

Stronger DONs. Stronger teams. Stronger care. 💜

09/01/2026

What happens when the next generation of nurses watches their leaders walk away?

Let me be clear: the DONs who decide this role isn’t for them are not bad nurses.

They’re often incredible nurses who simply didn’t receive the support, mentorship, training, or guidance they needed to stay.

And sometimes, walking away is the right decision for them.

But there’s a bigger conversation we need to have.

When new nurses, CNAs, and LPNs repeatedly watch their leaders become overwhelmed, burn out, and leave, what does that teach them about stepping into leadership themselves?

They may start thinking:

“Why would I ever want that job?”

And if no one is willing or prepared to step into these leadership roles, who will lead the next generation of long-term care?

✈️ Would you get on an airplane without a pilot?

Our nursing departments need strong leaders, too.

That’s why supporting, developing, and mentoring DONs isn’t just about helping one nurse succeed.

It’s about protecting the future of nursing leadership.

💜 Something Is Coming for the Leader Behind the DON Title

As a Director of Nursing, you’re used to being the person everyone turns to.

When staffing falls apart, you find a solution.
When survey pressure rises, you prepare the team.
When difficult decisions have to be made, you make them.
When your staff needs direction, you lead.

But leadership can become heavy when you’re always pouring into everyone else and rarely have the opportunity to pour back into yourself.

That’s why we’re creating the DON Success Empowerment Retreat™.

This will be an intentional experience created specifically for Directors of Nursing who are ready to step outside the demands of the building and focus on becoming stronger, more confident, more connected leaders.

A space for leadership development. Real conversations. Meaningful connections. Personal growth. And time to think beyond the next staffing issue, survey, or crisis.

Because sometimes the next level of your leadership doesn’t require you to work harder.

It requires space to grow.

The full retreat details and dates will be announced soon, but you can make sure you’re among the first to know.

✨ The Priority Waitlist is officially open.

Waitlist members will receive retreat announcements, registration information, and important updates as they become available.

You spend every day developing your department and supporting the people around you. This time, make room for your own growth, too.

Nine years didn’t come easy. But they taught me how to lead differently. 💜

There were ups and downs. Moments when I questioned myself, lost confidence, and wondered if I could really keep going.

But I did.

Not because I had everything figured out, but because I was willing to grow.

I had to change my mindset.
I had to communicate differently.
I had to learn to see situations from another perspective.
And sometimes, I had to step back and allow someone else to lead.

That didn’t make me weak. It made me a stronger leader.

Leadership isn’t about always being the one in front. It’s about knowing when to lead, when to listen, when to adjust, and when to trust the people around you.

Nine years later, I’m still learning. Still growing. And still grateful for every lesson that helped shape the leader I am today.

And if you’re a DON going through a season where you’re questioning yourself, don’t count yourself out. Your difficult season may be developing the leader you’re becoming.

Sunday is your reminder that you are more than your title. 💜

You spend the week making decisions, solving problems, supporting your team, caring for residents, and carrying responsibilities most people never see.

But today, permit yourself to put some of that weight down.

Rest. Pray. Reset. Be present.

You do not have to have every answer today. Sometimes leadership looks like trusting God enough to rest and believing that what needs your attention will still be there when you return.

A rested leader can come back with greater clarity, patience, and purpose.

Rest today. Lead again tomorrow. 💜
