Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh

Iyengar Yoga Institute of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh's Iyengar Yoga Studio Yoga On Centre is Pittsburgh's only Iyengar Yoa Studio. We are detail oriented and teach specific actions within each pose.

Instead of moving through the postures quickly, we hold them to reap deeper effects. We use props to help people with any level of ability, or disability, to access the poses. We teach advanced students and teachers AND we help people after debilitating injuries. No one is too stiff, too out of shape or too old to practice at Yoga On Centre. You can do it! We can show you how!

Today’s Summer Teacher Spotlight is on longtime practitioner turned recent instructor, Erika Bruce! You can catch her assisting Christina and Jessica in some of the morning classes as well as co-teaching her own Level 1 on Wednesday evenings at 6 (starting tonight)! Check out her bio below:

Erika took her first yoga class more than 20 years ago—and it just happened to be Iyengar. She was instantly hooked. The practice brought her much-needed calm, focus, and body awareness, providing balance to a demanding career in the culinary arts.
After moving from Boston to Pittsburgh in 2009, Erika began practicing at Yoga on Center with Christina. Following surgery in 2017, she worked with both Sarah and Jessica in the Yoga Therapy class, where she experienced firsthand the profound healing potential of Iyengar yoga. That experience deepened her practice and inspired her to share its benefits with others.
Erika is a culinary educator dedicated to helping people cook and eat well through practical, nutrition-focused teaching. Whether in the kitchen or the yoga studio, she brings a supportive, mindful approach that encourages wellness, confidence, and community.

Today’s Summer Break Teacher Spotlight Series is on one of our newest teachers, trainee Tom Heatherington! Last year, Tom came to an Iyengar yoga class out of curiosity and decided to stick around. Christina saw in him a committed, curious, and disciplined practitioner and inquired about Tom’s potential interest in training in the Iyengar method. Welcome aboard Tom, we’re glad to have you! Check out Tom’s bio below. He and his fellow trainee Erika will be debuting their Level 1 class Wednesday nights at 6pm starting 7/8!

Tom Heatherington has practiced yoga since 2016, drawn first to Hatha styles and to acroyoga, which he still practices avidly. He came to Iyengar yoga for its precise focus on alignment and body mechanics, and for its broader vision of yoga as a path to lifelong health and well-being, a conviction that mirrors his long career in the health industry. Tom now studies in the Iyengar Yoga Intensive Program under Christina Sible and the institute’s teaching team, deepening his practice as he works toward certification. In class, students can expect close attention to alignment, thoughtful use of props to make poses accessible to every body, and an emphasis on building the strength, mobility, and steadiness that carry over into daily life.

Today’s Summer Break Teacher Spotlight is on Diane Lassman, one of our most experienced and committed teachers here at IYIP. In addition to teaching two weekly classes oh her own and subbing for many other teachers, you might catch Diane at the studio doing community organizing, dancing, or doing whatever needs to be done! Thank you Diane for your unwavering, decades-long, commitment and support of IYIP, we appreciate you! Read Diane’s bio below!

Diane brings 27 years of teaching experience to our studio. After careers in both nursing and teaching she turned seriously to yoga after dealing with severe back pain since she was a young woman and a serious runner. As her pain disappeared her commitment to the practice deepened. What began as a way to manage pain became a doorway to inner stability as well. As Diane’s awareness grew of yoga’s capacity to cultivate mindfulness and a sense of wholeness she realized that she needed to teach once again to share this holistic practice. She did not know early on how much this practice would ground her and help her navigate through the many years her son was ill with a severe chronic illness. It was a profoundly challenging time but the teachings, practice and community helped her through this difficult time.

Diane loves working with those that believe they are too old or too inflexible or too this or that to start a practice. There is so much joy realizing what we are capable of achieving under the right circumstances. One area that Diane is giving more focus to along with teaching her level 1 class is bone density and Osteoporosis (as well as Osteopenia). Women start to see a shift between bone building and the breaking down of bone in their late 20’s early 30’s. We have a crisis with women of all ages not understanding how to be proactive to minimize this or perhaps stop it from occurring altogether. Men, although we rarely discuss it, can be affected as well.

Diane, now that she has turned 70, believes more than ever that yoga complements everything we do and allows us to age as gracefully as possible. In her free time she is a Dragon Boat racer and dancer.

Happy Monday! Today’s Summer Break Teacher Spotlight is on Jessica Benner! Check out her Sunday 11:30am Level 1 class beginning 7/11! Bio below!

As a child, Jessica loved lounging on the floor in karnapidasana although at the time she didn’t know anything about what she was doing, it just felt nice curling up with her knees by her ears. She was athletic participating in basketball and track in school but didn’t ‘do’ yoga until college. In graduate school, Jessica would meet up with a friend each week and guide them through sequences of yoga poses. In 2013, this friend learned about a class at Yoga on Centre (now IYIP) and they gave it a try. It was transformative. Christina’s teaching was methodical and precise and Jessica never looked back.

From late 2017 to early 2020, Jessica assisted Sara Azarius in the Yoga Therapy course, working 1:1 with students focusing on specific ailments. Jessica teaches a level 1 class on Sundays and is currently training under Christina towards an Iyengar certification. She learned much from Abhijata Iyengar at the 2016, 2023 (virtual) and 2026 National Iyengar Yoga Conventions. As an accessibility advocate, she appreciates that Iyengar yoga is an accessible style of practice that offers benefits for every person regardless of their current ability.

Otherwise, Jessica works at Carnegie Mellon University as a librarian helping people find information, use data, and make maps, goes hiking, putters around in her garden, and makes liquor infusions.

Teacher Spotlight on Maureen Martin! We realize it has been a while since we’ve introduced our teachers, so ahead of the Summer Quarter which begins on Tuesday 7/7, we’d like to reintroduce everyone, beginning with Maureen, who you can find at IYIP running the studio alongside Christina (Maureen is IYIP’s treasurer), subbing classes, and teaching her Saturday 8:30am Supported Level 1/2. Check out her bio below!

Bio:

Maureen has been practicing Iyengar yoga since the mid 90’s and teaching since 2015. Over the years, her focus has shifted from a more rigorous, physical practice to a gentler, inner-focused practice. She currently teaches a Saturday morning supported, mixed level class and works a day job full time. Off the mat she pours love into her family and the business of running the studio alongside Christina. She is grateful for the community we have here and hopes to see it continue to grow!
