The Midwife Center for Birth & Women's Health is southwestern Pennsylvania's only licensed and accredited freestanding birth center offering primary gynecological care, prenatal care and childbirth in a warm and supportive birth center. Our goal is to provide safe and satisfying care that is personalized to meet the needs of the client. We are guided by the philosophy that a person should be in co

ntrol of their own health care, including their birth experience. The Midwife Center accepts the following payment methods for primary gynecological, prenatal and childbirth care:
– Most PA medical assistance plans, including UPMC for You, Gateway and United Community Plan
– Most local and national private insurance plans, including UPMC, Highmark*, United and Aetna
– If you do not have insurance, we can assist you in applying for medical assistance. If you do not qualify for medical assistance you may be eligible for sliding-scale care. The Midwife Center also offers payment plans.

*If you are pregnant and have Highmark, please visit our website at midwifecenter.org or call 412.321.6880 to learn more. Our home-like facility is conveniently located on Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The first floor of our Center houses three nature-themed birth suites, each with its own large bathroom with a whirlpool bath, and our family kitchen. Upstairs is a large waiting room, three exam rooms and administrative offices. Our extensive video and book library is available here as well. Care at our facility is provided by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who are registered nurses with additional education in midwifery. As all CNMs, our midwives are certified by examination through the American College of Nurse-Midwives or the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Council and licensed by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine. TMC is a private, non-profit practice, supported in part by patient fees, United Way Contributors Choice, and tax-deductible contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations. TMC accepts most insurance plans and is a member organization of Adagio Health, which enables the Center to provide gynecological care to clients for free or on a sliding fee scale based on income and family size. The facility is licensed by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC). Please visit our website to learn more about our services, including weekly Wellness Walk-In Fridays program from 12:30-5:00 pm. http://www.midwifecenter.org

🎨 Flock Artist Collective Feature: Maggie Bjorklund 🎨

For the month of June, we'll be highlighting the current building-wide exhibition from the Flock Collective and each of the artists who have work on display. Today's featured artist: .bjorklund

Maggie Bjorklund is a visual artist working in oil paint on panel. She works in her hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she lives with her spouse and child. Her work has been shown nationally in Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, and was featured in Two Coats of Paint blogazine in 2025. She earned a BA in Art from DePaul University in 2021. She is a current artist-in-residence at Field Day x Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.

"I make paintings to capture the spirit of a thing, engaging memory, sensation, and emotion to create abstract landscapes. Drawing inspiration from the woods around my home, religious iconography, and motherhood, I take to details that ignite reverence, grief, and reflection. I’m drawn to earthy, fleshy textures–dirt, plants, bark, decomposing matter, insects, light, water. Imagery that emits cyclical decay and persistent life are particularly fertile ground as starting points for the work. The paintings emerge as I digest these encounters with nature. My process is intuitive and materially driven. Compositions unveil as I manipulate the paint, moving and removing strokes until forms are found, welcoming surprise and loss as I go. Sweeping, thin brushstrokes coalesce to vaguely suggest forms. Gesture and texture take precedence over rendering–the effect of the brushstrokes themselves guides the painting. Subtle moments of melding marks and overlapping color construct the final work, forming a composition that is suggestive, but welcoming of contemplation."

🎨 Flock Artist Collective Feature: Aimee Bungard 🎨

For the month of June, we'll be highlighting the current building-wide exhibition from the Flock Collective and each of the artists who have work on display. Today's featured artist:

Aimee Bungard is an artist living and working in the hills of Appalachia just outside Pittsburgh with her guitar player husband, 3 freerange children, 2 Suessian mutts and 1 perfect Torti kitty. She considers Giacometti, Vincent, Frida, Hilma Af Klint, Tascha Tudor, Bukowski, Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and RamDass to be of the highest inspiration. She briefly attended Montserrat School of Art. Aimee is a member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Flock Artists Collective, West Hills Art League and has exhibited across the United States. She can be found at www.aimeebungardart.com

"My art has become an authentic statement of my every changing now, filled with fears (real and imagined), pain (chronic and seasonal), repressions and unimaginable growth. The exploration of self is my life’s work. It is through understanding of my humanness I can fully engage with this shared reality. It is my job as steward of this body and being to catalogue the experience. My work speaks to the feminine, the mother, the child, the animal, the diagnosis, the neurosis, the wife, the ego and the vacuum. Working in mixed media, albeit mostly paint and drawing mediums, I hope to create a visua field where people are invited to find themselves."

📣 Urgent call for support from our Midwife Center community!

Contact your Members of Congress TODAY and urge them to protect the midwifery set-aside in the final FY 2027 Labor, HHS Appropriations Bill. This funding is vital for sustaining and growing the midwifery workforce that so many communities rely on. Without it, accredited midwifery education programs—which prepare Certified Nurse-Midwives, Certified Midwives, and Certified Professional Midwives and expand access to midwifery-led care—are at risk.

Spread this message to everyone who cares about maternal health and believes in expanding access to midwives, birth centers, and midwifery-led care.

There is no time to lose—urge Congress now to preserve the midwifery set-aside funding in the final FY 2027 appropriations bill. Every voice makes a difference.

Visit https://www.birthcenters.org/news/advocacy-alert--protect-midwifery-funding for more information and to take action now!

🎨 Flock Artist Collective Feature: Megan Lindsey 🎨

For the month of June, we'll be highlighting the current building-wide exhibition from the Flock Collective and each of the artists who have work on display, beginning with artist and poet,

"As an AuDHD artist and poet, I think in words and phrases before experimenting with visual images, and I am learning to accept my fluctuating capacity. Visual creation helps me represent and anchor my internal state for myself; poetry lets me share my deep and intense feelings with others. On days I cannot engage with either practice, I am learning to forgive my lack of productivity and re-anchor myself in nature and the writings of the mystics.

Since childhood, I have loved textiles and handwork - starting with friendship bracelets and Japanese origami, moving through knitting and three dimensional crochet and embroidery to rope making, basic basketry, and sewing stuffed creatures. Viewed through an autistic lens, making is both a special interest and a way of stimming. “Keeping my hands busy” as my grandmother and her grandmother before her certainly did, is actually a survival function for an autistic person. The movement, complex rhythms, and sensorial textures of handcrafting all help calm and organize my wild mind..."

⭐ Nurse Spotlight: Alaina Smith, BSN, RN, IBCLC ⭐

Last (but certainly not least!!!) in our series is Alaina Smith, BSN, RN, IBCLC!

1. Why did you decide to become a nurse?
"I've always loved the thought of helping others and the nursing profession really called to me, especially after seeing my grandfather in the hospital for an extended period of time and ultimately pass while in the hospital. My obstetrics rotation in nursing school sealed the deal for being a labor and delivery nurse and I truly couldn't imagine myself working in any other area. I was so fortunate to get a labor and delivery position right out of nursing school (almost 11 years ago!!)."

2. What is your favorite thing about being a nurse at The Midwife Center?
"It's incredibly hard to pick my favorite thing. Our clients really are amazing and our staff believe in the care we give, which just makes all the difference. I feel very proud of the work we do, especially working together when the universe brings lots of babies at once!"

3. What is one of the most memorable experiences you've had working at the Midwife Center?

"I've been here for a little over 3 years now and I have been present for multiple births within the same family. I also had the chance to support two different couples whose love and teamwork during labor really stood out. Lots of calm, peace, connection, and even joking between contractions--truly a gift to witness. During the second birth, I remember thinking how similar this labor was to the one a few months prior and then realized they were best friends when the first couple stopped by to say hi!"

4. What is one of your favorite hobbies?
"When I'm not with my two sweetie children & husband, I'm at the gym, either coaching or working out."

What is your go-to coffee/tea order?
"Love a vanilla latte with oatmilk!"

We are so lucky to have Alaina on our team at The Midwife Center! 💜

And to all of our nurses - thank you for providing exceptional, compassionate care to our clients and families!

1. Why did you decide to become a nurse?
"I knew from the beginning that I wanted to be a nurse in this very field after being at my brother's birth at the age of 10!"

2. What is your favorite thing about being a nurse at TMC?
"Getting to see our clients families develop over the years! It's all about the continuity of care - seeing people for multiple births and them remembering us"

3. What is one of the most memorable experiences you've had working at the Midwife Center?
"I will never forget that day - a very special adoption story that I got to help with! And then I got to do the follow up visits the next day in the birth moms home as well as the adoptive parents home to see the baby! It was so special!!"

4. What is one of your favorite hobbies?
"Love traveling with my family and my kids for their travel sports (is that a hobby?)"
