I recently reviewed the work of Quorum Innovations and its physician-scientist founders, Nicholas Monsul and Eva Berkes, and could not be more impressed by the originality and scientific sophistication of their platform. Leveraging years of DARPA-supported microbiome and biofilm research, they have developed what may represent the first orally administered technology designed to physically bind microplastics during ingestion and help prevent their absorption into the body, a potentially groundbreaking advancement in preventative medicine and environmental health. Their work sits at the intersection of microbiome science, neuroscience, barrier protection, and public health, and I believe it represents one of the most innovative translational biomedical efforts I have encountered in years. A huge congratulations on publishing the first study demonstrating, in human testing, that Qi601 can bind microplastic particles in people.

Announcement: Dr. Joseph Maroon was the Visiting Professor at Advent health, Orlando, Florida on May 21st and the honored guest for their Neurology/Neurosurgery Visiting Professor Series. He presented His recent neuroscience research on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), observations on the cryo- immunotherapy of cancer with Syncromune, Inc, and his collaboration with Dr. Pravat Mandal, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to non-invasively, for the first time, diagnose a deficiency of glutathione, the primary antioxidant in the brain, in patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's disease.

He was the guest of Dr. Melvin Fields, the Director of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Florida Hospital System's Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery Program. He is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Central Florida College of Medicine and received his training in neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Joseph Maroon, a 2025 recipient of the Ellis Island Medals of Honor, joins neurosurgical colleague and friend, Roger Hartl, a recipient this year, director of spinal surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and neurosurgical director of the Och Spine Center at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

It is one of the nation’s most prestigious civilian awards recognizing individuals whose work reflects enduring contributions to society, service and the values that define the American experience. It is recognized by both Houses of the US Congress. Since its founding in 1986, the Medal has been awarded to a distinguished group of leaders whose impact extends well beyond their professional fields.

Past honorees include 7 U.S. presidents, several Nobel Laureates and prominent figures across medicine, science, educations, business, public service and the arts including Ronald Reagan, Joe Biden, Muhammad Ali, Lee Iacocca, Dan Rooney and many others chosen for their compassion, generosity and community service.

Born in Germany, Dr. Hartl immigrated to the United States and served part of his neurosurgical residency at the Allegheny Health Network under the directorship of Dr. Maroon. Dr. Hartl initiated a neurosurgical project in Tanzania where he is responsible for training over 23 neurosurgeons that fundamentally changed access to neurosurgical care.

The symbolism of Ellis Island, where over 12, million immigrants first set forth in America, carries personal meaning for both Dr. Hartl and Dr. Maroon whose grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island before settling in the United States. Established in 1986 the Ellis Island Medals of Honor commemorates the legacy of immigration and celebrates individuals who exemplify leadership, service and commitment to the ideals of the United States.

Dr. Joseph Maroon was the keynote speaker for the 14th annual Health Care Professionals Conference sponsored by the Julian Gray Elder Law Firm in Pittsburgh, PA. The conference featured guest speakers discussing medical, legal and safety issues focused on the middle aged and older population.

Dr. Maroon spoke on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for healing wounds of the extremities as well as wounds of the brain like stroke, post-concussion syndrome and PTSD. He also presented his work with Professor Pravat Mandal, former director of the National Brain Research Centre in Gurgaon, India and now Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

They have shown, for the first time, a deficiency of glutathione in the brain in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases by measuring chemicals in the brain non-invasively with magnetic resonance spectroscopy. They hope to reverse this deficiency with a precursor that crosses the blood brain barrier, gamma glutamyl cysteine or glyteine which is available as a supplement. Neither have any financial interest. in their IRB approved studies. The conference was attended by over 150 nurses, health care providers, lawyers and health care administrators.
