Our Residents shared an afternoon of joy and laughter on August 21, as they gathered to view some of the best skits from "The Carol Burnett Show" and sang along to "I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together." We reunited with hilarious 1970s characters like Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Wiggins and enjoyed such iconic sketches as "Went with the Wind" and "The Dentist."

Everyone had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again, especially Sister Barbara Ann Lengvarsky. “This was such a great afternoon!” she boasted after giggling her way through nearly 90 minutes of antics from Carol, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.

This day and all the “movie days” ahead are made possible by our friends at Amazing Scholar Academy Preschool, where a spring service project raised funds for us to purchase a new smart TV and mobile cart. We are deeply grateful to ASAP’s teachers, students and families for their generosity. Look for announcements coming soon about upcoming programs, movies and mini-marathons featuring Resident requests.

What a wonderful evening it was last night when we welcomed our friends from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish back to our hilltop for "Pray & Picnic in the Park." After a brief late-afternoon rain shower, the skies cleared for worship with Father Leroy DiPietro and a delicious picnic-style meal lovingly prepared by the parish and its Appalachian mission group. We are so grateful for the efforts to make this event accessible to and enjoyable for our Residents and their family members. Special thanks also to Brandon Landscape for prepping our rear courtyard for the event. It was such a blessing to share this special evening with you.

In June, our Residents took part in an especially “uplifting” craft with hot air balloons as inspiration. After learning about the history of these storied aircraft and listening to the song "Up, Up and Away" by The Fifth Dimension, our creative crafters made their own colorful balloons. Each Resident selected their own paint and special touches, “launching” a lofty, summer vibe in our lounges and hallways.

Today we are remembering our friend and long-time employee Bernie Wyzkoski, who died on Mother's Day. Bernie worked at Marian Hall for 36 years before retiring at age 80. "She absolutely loved her job and loved working here," her daughter told us. "She always joked that she should have stayed a few more years." May dear Bernie rest in peace.

Many of our Residents are expecting special visits on Sunday for Mother’s Day, but some family members were able to join us for today’s Mother’s Day Luncheon. While enjoying a special menu, all soaked in the musical stylings of violinist Devon Arrington, who serenaded us with everything from Broadway classics to “Ave Marie,” Schubert’s timeless ode to Mary and motherhood. We hope that all Mt. Assisi Place moms — the ones who live here, the ones who work here, and the ones who raised us — have a wonderfully restful Mother’s Day Weekend.

We were blessed to welcome our old friends from Amazing Scholar Academy Preschool back to our hilltop today. They generously delivered small gifts to each of our Residents and raised more than $400 for us to purchase a smart TV and mobile cart so our Activities team can share special programming with our Residents all around the building. Following the success of our "I Love Lucy" mini-marathon last fall, we're looking to forward to screening such classics as "The Carol Burnett Show" in the coming months.

We had a very hippity-hoppity Easter here at Mt. Assisi Place. We were delighted to learn that the Bunny Trail led right up to the door of our facility, and in hopped the Easter Bunny … three times! They brought both treats and joy to our Residents during Holy Week, visiting our Dining Room, lounges and even Resident rooms. While Mrs. Easter Bunny was here on April 2, she spread a little springtime joy to the children of The Saint Constantine School of Pittsburgh, as well. Special thanks to Mary Pegg, daughter of former Resident Loraine Poslusny, for visiting in her beautifully-detailed costume and making everyone’s smile shine a little brighter. We also appreciate our friends from Monarch and Commonwealth Hospices for sending their own bunnies on April 3, to keep the fun hopping a little longer.
