A Winter Safety Message from Dr. Joel Smooke

With heavy snow in the forecast, I want to remind everyone to take extra care if you plan on shoveling. Snow shoveling can be surprisingly strenuous and puts extra stress on the heart, especially in cold temperatures.

A few important tips:
• Take it slow and pace yourself. Don’t rush.
• Warm up first, just like you would before exercise.
• Push the snow when possible instead of lifting it.
• Lift small amounts and avoid twisting your body. Go out once per hour or two to clear the snow instead of waiting for a large accumulation.
• Dress warmly but avoid overdressing—you don’t want to overheat.
• Stay hydrated, even in the cold.
• Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.

If you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or other medical conditions—or if you’re unsure—it’s often safest to ask for help or use a snow removal service.
