So you’re thinking about private practice? 👀

Let’s pump the brakes for a sec. It’s not just “more money + freedom” (though, yes, those are perks). It’s also a business.

Here’s what you really need to think about:

💸 Money — Can you handle a slow start? Do you know your fixed expenses (rent, EMR, insurance, website) and how to plan for taxes?
🗂️ Business Skills — You’re not just the therapist anymore. You’re also the CEO, marketer, bookkeeper, and admin. (Congrats? 🫠)
📣 Clients — How will people find you? What’s your plan for marketing and referrals? Do you know how to screen for fit?
🎯 Niche + Brand — Who do you love working with, and how will you stand out in a sea of “anxiety + trauma” therapists?
Private practice can be incredible—but it’s not a leap you want to take blind. 🪂
This is the stuff they definitely didn’t teach you in grad school.

It’s a good thing you have US!

🚨 Therapists, if you’re just “winging it” in private practice… read this before you burn out.

If we could hop in a time machine and re-do our early private practice days, here’s what we’d fix:

1️⃣ Make a business plan — Your “plan” can’t just be “hope clients find me.” Map out your numbers, goals, and systems before you jump.

2️⃣ Make the transition sooner — Stop waiting for the perfect time. Spoiler: it doesn’t exist.

3️⃣ Niche earlier — Pick your people and go all in. Serving everyone just waters down your impact (and your marketing).

4️⃣ Network like your business depends on it — Because it does. The more connections you have, the less you rely on hope + Instagram’s algorithm.
Your future self will thank you (and maybe even have Fridays off).

Here’s what to cover:

1️⃣ Their Goals for Therapy
→ “What made you reach out now?”
→ “What do you hope will feel different in a few months?”

2️⃣ Presenting Concerns
→ Get a quick overview of symptoms, challenges, and history (enough to screen for scope, not do a full intake).

3️⃣ Your Approach
→ Briefly explain how you work + what clients can expect in sessions.

4️⃣ Scope & Fit
→ Are their needs in your area of expertise?
→ Do they want something you don’t offer? (Example: “I’m looking for EMDR” and you don’t do EMDR.)

5️⃣ Logistics Check
→ Scheduling, fees/insurance, cancellation policy.
→ Make sure they can realistically commit.

💡 Pro Tip: End the call with a clear next step—either booking the first session or referring them to a better fit.
