Celebrating at the park with the HandinHand team, my family and part of my village!

Let's talk about something we don't talk about enough: mental health stigma in Black communities.
We've been taught to be strong. To handle it. To pray through it. To keep it in the family.
And while faith and resilience are beautiful, they're not substitutes for healing.
The truth is:
🀎 Trauma doesn't disappear because you're strong
🀎 Prayer and therapy can coexist
🀎 Asking for help doesn't make you weak
🀎 Our ancestors survived so we could heal
Mental health stigma has kept too many of us suffering in silence. It's time to change that narrative.
At HandinHand, we create space where Black people can heal without shame, process trauma without judgment, and build the lives we deserve. And this year, we're expanding that work, building something specifically designed for people who are ready to go beyond surviving.
More on that soon.
Therapy isn't a last resort. It's an act of self-love

To the mothers, the aunties, the grandmas, the women raising kids who aren't biologically theirs, this post is for you!

You are still standing. Through it all, the losses, the exhaustion, the years of putting everyone else first. You are still standing.

Here's the thing...Still standing and actually okay are not the same thing.

Two things can be true.
You can be strong and also be tired.
You can show up every single day and also be running on empty.
You can love deeply and also be carrying more than anyone should hold alone.

This Mother's Day weekend, we're not here to celebrate how much you can endure. We're here to ask, who is pouring into you?

πŸ’™ You are allowed to rest without earning it.
πŸ’™ You are allowed to ask for what you need.
πŸ’™ You are allowed to not be everything to everyone.
πŸ’™ You are allowed to put something down.

Therapy is not for people who have fallen apart. It's for people who are tired of holding it all together alone.

You deserve care and not just one day a year. Every. Single. Day.

Some transitions and people are worth celebrating out loud. Thirteen years ago, two women had a vision for what healing could look like for Black people and communities of color in Pittsburgh. Today, we take a moment to honor one of them as she steps boldly into what comes next.

Today marks the transition of our co-founder, Sharise from HandinHand Counseling Services.

Since 2013, Sharise has been more than a business partner. Her contribtions can be seen all throughout HandinHand. The way our clinicians show up with care and intention. The clients who found healing in spaces she helped create. The culture of excellence, compassion, and cultural responsiveness that defines who we are. Sharise helped build something that truly matters, and I want you all to know, that foundation does not leave when she does.

HandinHand remains committed to providing trauma-informed, culturally grounded mental health care right here in Pittsburgh and beyond. The mission continues to grow.

Sharise, thank you for saying yes in 2013 and thank you for all the you have contributed to HandinHand ever since.

Please join us in celebrating her and wishing her well as she steps into her next season. The best is still ahead, for Sharise and for Handinhand Counseling Services

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! At HandinHand, we're not just aware. We're active.

This month, we're celebrating:
✨ The courage it takes to start therapy
✨ The strength it takes to keep showing up
✨ The healing that happens when communities prioritize mental health

We'll be sharing:
β†’ Real talk about mental health in Black communities
β†’ Tips for supporting your own wellbeing
β†’ Stories of resilience and hope
β†’ Updates on what we're building at HandinHand

Mental health isn't a one-month conversation. But this May, let's make some noise about it.

We are also excited about May, as this is the month we will be featured with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Be sure to look for our logo at the PNC Park throughout this month, view our commercial on SportsNet Pittsburgh and much more!

We came to share resources. We stayed to line dance. πŸ’ƒπŸΎπŸ–€

HandinHand had the honor of joining the Pittsburgh Scholar House for their community dinner yesterday evening, and it was truly a night to remember.

This is what community looks like. People showing up, breaking bread, and reminding each other that we are not in this alone.
We are so grateful for the partnership with Pittsburgh Scholar House and for every scholar in that room who is building something beautiful in the middle of real life. We see you. We are rooting for you. And we are honored to be part of your village.

Big gratitude to Pittsburgh Scholar House for welcoming us and for the continued partnership. We are just getting started.

Shout out to all of the wonderful community partners that support this amazing organization!

This is the moment we found out.
A few weeks ago, I got called to a "meeting" at PNC Park. What I didn't know? The Pirates and PNC were about to surprise me with the news that HandinHand had been selected for their "Going to Bat for Small Business" program. I'm not usually speechless, but this came close!
Here's what was running through my mind in these photos:
β€’ All the clients who've trusted us with their trauma and healing
β€’ Our team who shows up with excellence and compassion every single day
β€’ The Pittsburgh communities we serve who deserve access to quality mental health care
β€’ My own Pirates memories as a kid at Three Rivers Stadium with my mom and brothers
β€’ My son who dreams of playing at PNC Park someday
This award isn't just about HandinHand. It's about every person who's ever felt like healing was out of reach and found hope here. It's about breaking cycles of trauma in Pittsburgh families. It's about proving that mental health care belongs in every community.
Thank you and for this incredible honor. We promise to make you proud. πŸ’›πŸ–€

We have some exciting news to share! πŸŽ‰

HandinHand Counseling Services has been selected as one of six businesses for the Pittsburgh Pirates and PNC's "Going to Bat for Small Business" 2026 program!

This recognition means the world to our team. For over a decade, we've been serving Pittsburgh families with trauma-informed mental health care, and to be honored by two Pittsburgh institutions we deeply respect is truly humbling.

Throughout May, you'll see HandinHand featured during Pirates broadcasts, at PNC Park, and across Pirates social media.

Here's what this also means...More Pittsburgh families will learn that healing from trauma is possible. More people will understand that mental health care isn't a luxury. And more of our community will know that support is available right here, right now.
Thank you to the Pittsburgh Pirates and PNC for believing in our mission and assisting us in pushing it forward.
Thank you to our incredible team who makes this work possible every single day. And thank you to our community for trusting us with your stories and your healing.
This is just the beginning. πŸ’›πŸ–€

Daisy Lampkin fought for justice right here in Pittsburgh and understood something profound: you can't heal if you're not free.

This week of "Reclaiming Our Narrative" honors Daisy Lampkin, a Pittsburgh civil rights leader whose life's work reminds us that social justice and mental health are inseparable.
Born in Reading, PA in 1884, Daisy Lampkin spent most of her life organizing right here in Pittsburgh. She was a national field secretary for the NAACP, a founder of the Pittsburgh Courier's "Double V Campaign," and a tireless advocate for voting rights, fair housing, and economic justice.
Ms. Lampkin knew what we know at HandinHand: trauma doesn't just live in individual bodiesβ€”it lives in systems. And healing requires both personal support and systemic change.
Her legacy teaches us:
✨ Advocacy is a form of care for yourself and your community
✨ You can't separate mental health from social conditions
✨ Liberation is both internal and external work
✨ Community organizing is community healing
Daisy Lampkin showed up for Pittsburgh. She organized, she fought, she built coalitions, and she refused to accept that dignity was negotiable.
As we reclaim our narrative, we remember: healing happens in therapy rooms, but it also happens in movements, in organizing, in the fight for justice.
