🎉 175 years ago today, our story began. In the pictures below are the Board of Health Minutes from the evening of Wednesday, June 4, 1851.
On that day, eight community leaders gathered at the old courthouse in Pittsburgh’s Diamond to hold the very first meeting of the Board of Health of Pittsburgh — the organization that would become the Allegheny County Health Department.
President Neville B. Craig, Treasurer Allen Cordell, Secretary Charles Naylor, and members M.W. Lewis, Daniel Bornman, Dr. Alexander Black, Edward Dithridge, and James McCune couldn’t have known what they were starting.
Today, we protect, promote, and preserve the health and well-being of more than 1.2 million Allegheny County residents.
Neville was a well-documented Pittsburgh lawyer, journalist, historian, and politician, born in 1787 and active in the city throughout the mid-1800s.
Edward was a prominent Pittsburgh glass manufacturer and inventor, active in the city by 1839 and a partner in the Fort Pitt Glass Works by 1850.
175 years of public health. 175 years of community. Here’s to the next 175! 🍾
