It's World Food Safety Day!

Proper hand washing, food cooling procedures and operating under temporary water service interruptions, are just a few of the many sets of guidelines the Allegheny County Health Department Food Safety program offers, so that food establishments can run as efficient as possible.

These resources don’t just apply to restaurants. There is plenty of information to assist safe food handling at home and away from home.

Today is the 12th National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

It kicks off Wear Orange Weekend to honor survivors and build community with those working to end gun violence.

Why orange?

In 2013, Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the nearly 130 people shot and killed every day in the United States, along with the hundreds more who are wounded and the countless others whose lives have been changed by gun violence.

Gun violence is a substantial problem in Allegheny County, and it is a leading cause of premature death.

🎉 175 years ago today, our story began. In the pictures below are the Board of Health Minutes from the evening of Wednesday, June 4, 1851.

On that day, eight community leaders gathered at the old courthouse in Pittsburgh’s Diamond to hold the very first meeting of the Board of Health of Pittsburgh — the organization that would become the Allegheny County Health Department.

President Neville B. Craig, Treasurer Allen Cordell, Secretary Charles Naylor, and members M.W. Lewis, Daniel Bornman, Dr. Alexander Black, Edward Dithridge, and James McCune couldn’t have known what they were starting.

Today, we protect, promote, and preserve the health and well-being of more than 1.2 million Allegheny County residents.

Neville was a well-documented Pittsburgh lawyer, journalist, historian, and politician, born in 1787 and active in the city throughout the mid-1800s.

Edward was a prominent Pittsburgh glass manufacturer and inventor, active in the city by 1839 and a partner in the Fort Pitt Glass Works by 1850.

175 years of public health. 175 years of community. Here’s to the next 175! 🍾

Care doesn’t happen alone.

Men’s health is shaped by relationships — partners, families, caregivers, friends, & communities at
every stage of life.

When men are supported via connection, education and shared advocacy, they seek care, stay
engaged and live healthier, longer lives.

This Men’s Health Month, we’re recognizing care as a partnership — because stronger connections lead to stronger health outcomes.
