We had a ball celebrating National Soccer Day with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC!

Riverhounds players Robbie Mertz and Albert Dikwa spent the afternoon with patients and families, bringing plenty of smiles and friendly competition to UPMC Children's. Judging by the goals scored, our young athletes may have had the home-field advantage.

A Winning Drive for Heart Patients! A huge thank you to Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel for launching his “Have a Heart” Campaign benefiting UPMC Children’s Heart Institute. We loved seeing our patient families, Heart Institute team members, and the Pitt Athletics community come together today to support heart patients and families. H2P!

At UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, we are proud to support efforts that advance pediatric transplant care, champion organ donation, and give more children the chance to grow up healthy and thrive.

We are encouraged by recent federal action focused on improving access to pediatric liver transplantation. Following advocacy efforts led by transplant experts George V. Mazariegos, MD, and Sang-Mo Kang, MD, along with parent advocate Maria Bell of the Starzl Network for Excellence in Pediatric Transplantation, Senator Chuck Grassley as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has requested a review by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) of pediatric waitlist mortality and access to split-liver transplantation.

This important step brings greater attention to the challenges faced by children awaiting liver transplants and highlights opportunities to improve access to lifesaving organs for our youngest patients.

A simple vitamin K shot given shortly after birth can prevent severe and potentially life threatening bleeding in your baby.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all newborns receive this shot because it protects against vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), a condition that can occur suddenly and without warning.

Dr. David Wolfson shares why vitamin K is so important for newborns.
