Carol D. Schmidt

Age 79, suddenly on April 28, 2026, of South Side, PA. Born on February 27, 1947, Carol dedicated her life to nurturing and educating the next generation as a teacher's aide in the local school district, where she shared her love of learning and the rich history of Pittsburgh with countless students.

Carol's passion extended beyond the classroom; she found immense joy in sports and had a deep love for animals. Her infectious spirit and devotion to both her interests and community touched the lives of many. Carol is survived by her two sons, Max and Michael Schmidt, and her brother, James Wurst, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of kindness and compassion. Carol was preceded in death by her brother Robert Wurst.

Relatives and friends are welcome on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from 2 - 6 PM, at the Boron Funeral Home Inc. 1719 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15210.

As we remember Carol D. Schmidt, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her love for Pittsburgh, her dedication to education, and her tender compassion for animals and people alike will forever inspire us.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Animal Friends.

Mark Allen Nerkowski

Mark Allen Nerkowski was born on December 11th, 1959, to Shirley and Joseph Nerkowski and grew up alongside his sister, Lynn Medway (nee Nerkowski). As a lifelong Pittsburgher, he lived a full and remarkable life and was a person who made friends wherever he went. After starting out as a bricklayer, Mark went on to work for Smithfield Foods in Pittsburgh for over thirty years, known for being friendly, hardworking, and always willing to lend a hand. In his retirement he continued to enjoy gardening, being especially fond of growing tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers (and inspiring an infamous cucumber lasagna recipe lovingly made by his nieces), weightlifting, basketball, and supporting his favorite teams, the Steelers and the Penguins. He enjoyed watching true crime shows, modern day takes on mystery/crime dramas such as Monk, and old westerns like Tombstone and western dramas like Yellowstone. Known for his kindness, compassion, and generosity, he was a passionate outdoors man and a lifelong nature lover. Whether he was hunting with friends, fishing with family, or taking long walks in the park with his beloved dog Sadie, there was nothing that Mark didn't love about the great outdoors. After a hard-fought battle with cancer, he passed away peacefully on April 7th, 2026, surrounded by loving friends and family who wholeheartedly supported him and never left his side throughout his journey.
