Meet Jim Foster, cook with Nutrition and Food Services at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS).
Q. Are you (or a family member) a Veteran?
A. Both me and my father are Veterans. I served for 20 years as a career cook and retired as an E-5. My service was diverse and includes active-duty Navy, 87-91; Army Guard, 94-98; Navy Reserve, 2003-2006; and Air Guard, 2006-2017.
Q. Tell us a little about your job at VA Pittsburgh.
A. I cook for all the inpatients at VAPHS – that’s about 300 each meal, or 900 meals a day.
Q. Why did you want to work at VA, and how long have you been at VA Pittsburgh?
A. I wanted to work for Veterans and give back. Starting at the Butler VA in housekeeping during July 2018, transferring to VAPHS University Drive in housekeeping during November 2018. In July 2019, I transferred to my current position, serving for a total of 8 years in VA.
Q. What is your favorite part of your job at VA Pittsburgh?
A. Making nutritious meals; it is all about my fellow Veterans.
Q. What is one thing that Veterans should know about VA that most don’t?
A. Just the shear resources available to Veterans. All you have to do is ask, and someone will help you get to the right place.
Q. Where are you from originally?
A. I grew up in Baldwin and still live three minutes from the house I grew up in.
Q. When you are not at work, what would we most likely find you doing?
A. If the Pens are playing at home, I will always be at the igloo. I also enjoy eating out at my favorite restaurant, in Whitehall (South Hills).
Q. What is your favorite or dream vacation?
A. Hawaii for the 80 degrees, sunshine, mai tais and no worries.
