Zest Pediatrics of Fox Chapel

Zest Pediatrics of Fox Chapel Pediatric office designed for parents to provide a personal, supportive, and accessible experience. She is always learning from them!

Dr. Hayley Hellstern is a board-certified pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). She was born and raised in Annapolis, MD and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University. Between college and medical school, she spent several years in Pittsburgh (thanks to her husband, who had established roots in the city while attending college at Carne

gie Mellon University). While in Pittsburgh, she volunteered in the Child Life Department at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where she spent her days playing with children whose families were unable to be by their side while they were in the hospital. Dr. Hellstern then moved to Colorado to attend medical school at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She and her husband were thrilled to return to Pittsburgh for her pediatric residency at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where Dr. Hellstern was selected as one of two residents in her class to partake in the Pediatric Advocacy, Leadership, and Service track. After several years in a “traditional” pediatric office, Dr. Hellstern realized she was not able to spend enough time with each of her patients and their families. She desired a practice model that allowed her to check in with her patients after-hours and provide them timely guidance when ill. Since her childhood, she dreamt of becoming a doctor who was “part of the family” – the way she always viewed her own pediatrician. She is thrilled to join Zest Pediatrics in a direct pediatric care model where she can provide the unique, specialized care each patient deserves. While Dr. Hellstern absolutely loves caring for children of all ages, she holds a special place in her heart for newborns and breastfeeding medicine. It brings her immense joy to journey with parents as they navigate the new world of parenting. She knows it takes a village to raise a child, and she would love to be part of yours! Outside of the office, she currently serves as an Early Career Representative for the Pennsylvania Chapter of the AAP, and is a member of the Advocacy and School Health Committees. She is also a member of the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition. Dr. Hellstern is the mother to two energetic, adventurous children who love to keep her on her toes. She and her family enjoy long walks around their neighborhood, watching hockey games (best NHL team is a heated topic in their family), and exploring the many playgrounds Pittsburgh has to offer.

The Most Important School Supply You're Not Buying...

Backpacks? ✔️
School supplies? ✔️
New shoes? ✔️

But the most important thing your child needs this school year isn't on a shopping list—it's sleep 😴

As pediatricians, we see it every August: summer bedtimes linger, but school mornings come early. Sleep affects far more than energy—it supports learning, memory, mood, immune health, and emotional regulation.

Zest's sleep recommendations by age:
Ages 5–9: 10–12 hours/night
Ages 10–12: 9–11 hours/night
Teens (13–17): 8–10 hours/night

A few simple tips:
✔ Start shifting bedtime earlier now—10–15 minutes every few nights.
✔ Turn off screens at least 60 minutes before bed.
✔ Keep wake-up times consistent, even on weekends.

A well-rested child is better prepared to learn, grow, and thrive. If sleep has been a struggle, your Zest pediatrician is here to help!

August is in full swing, and that means one thing at Zest Pediatrics: back-to-school season is officially HERE!

Whether you have a kindergartner heading in for the first time or a 17-year-old wrapping up their last year, Zest's back-to-school checklist applies:

☑Well-child visit scheduled (yes, even teens need this!)
☑Vaccines reviewed and up to date for their grade
☑Sports physical done for any child playing fall athletics
☑School forms, health plans & medication authorizations signed
☑Sleep schedule shifting earlier NOW — before school starts
☑Breakfast routine in place (protein matters at every age)
☑Mental health check-in: asked them what they're excited about AND nervous about?

Every age looks a little different — but the checklist applies to all school-aged kids!

⚽🏈👟 Fall Sports Season: Is Your Child Ready? 👟🏈⚽

From first-time soccer players to varsity athletes — fall sports season is here!

Here’s Zest’s pre-season checklist:
▪Sports physical — required for school athletics (middle & high school), recommended for all ages
▪Hydration: kids 5–12 need 6–8 cups daily; teen athletes need significantly more — start before practice, not during
▪Heat acclimatization: bodies at EVERY age need 10–14 days to adjust to August practice temps — first two weeks should be lower intensity
▪Sleep: ages 5–12 need 9–11 hours; teens need 8–10 — sleep IS athletic performance
▪Protein at every meal — especially important for growing athletes ages 10–17
▪Concussion awareness: teach your child at every age what to report and that it's safe to speak up

The habits built before the season starts protect athletes all the way through.

Sports physicals available now — book before August fills!

Yinz be safe out there! 😷☣️

Everyone should stay inside as much as possible (and it takes a lot for Dr. H to encourage kids to stay inside).

If you or your child have asthma, pay extra close attention to your symptoms and keep an inhaler nearby.

As always, reach out to your doctor if you have any questions or are experiencing concerning symptoms!

CODE MAROON: The health department says PM2.5 air quality conditions in areas of Allegheny County are in the hazardous range Thursday.

"At this time, the health department recommends no outdoor activities this evening and potentially tomorrow." FULL STORY⬇️

**Cyclospora: What I Want Parents to Know**

Cyclospora is a parasite that can sometimes contaminate fresh fruits and vegetables. It may cause watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue, with symptoms often appearing about a week after exposure.

The good news is that it does not spread directly from person to person, and effective treatment is available when needed.

My top priority is keeping your child well hydrated. I recommend offering an oral rehydration solution such as Pedialyte, continuing breastfeeding if applicable, and returning to a normal diet as tolerated.

To help prevent infection, wash fresh produce thoroughly, follow local health department updates regarding any recalled items, and remember that cooking fruits and vegetables kills the parasite. Good handwashing remains essential.

Please contact me or your child’s pediatrician promptly if your child shows signs of dehydration, has persistent or worsening diarrhea, blood in the stool, or a high fever. A stool test can confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment.

At Zest Pediatrics, I’m here to help keep your family healthy and informed. 🌟

You've made it through our June series — here's the part where we bring it together!

A summer rhythm isn't a schedule. It's a set of anchors that keep your family regulated without requiring perfection. ⚓

Here's what a summer rhythm typically looks like for our family:
▪️Morning anchor: consistent-ish wake time + breakfast together
▪️Midday anchor: lunch + outdoor time or activity before the heat peaks
▪️Afternoon anchor: downtime, creative play, or screens (within the rhythm)
▪️Evening anchor: family dinner + wind-down without screens, consistent-ish bedtime

That's it. Four loose anchors. Everything else can flex.

The research behind this is solid: it's PREDICTABILITY — not rigidity — that supports children's emotional regulation, sleep quality, and behavior. You don't need a perfect summer. You need a rhythm your family can actually keep!

If you have questions — about sleep, nutrition, movement, or anything else — that's what Zest is here for.

Direct access to your pediatrician, all summer long.
🔆 That's the Zest difference. 🔆

Worried about screen time? 📺
Let's talk about screens — without the panic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommends a hard daily hour limit for kids over 5. What the current evidence actually focuses on is displacement: are screens replacing sleep, physical activity, face-to-face interaction, and creative play? 🏃🏻‍♀️

➡When the answer is no — screens are part of an otherwise balanced day — there's significant flexibility.

➡When the answer is yes, that's where we see the impacts on mood, sleep, attention, and behavior.

🔆 For summer, we recommend building screens into the rhythm rather than fighting them:
▪️ Screens AFTER, not instead of. Screens after outdoor time, after a meal, after connection — not as the default first reach.
▪️ Consistent screen-free anchors. Meals and the hour before bed are the easiest and most evidence-supported places to start. ⚓
▪️ Screens out of bedrooms at night. This single change consistently improves sleep quality in children of all ages, especially for adolescents. Give those screens a bedtime and make sure all devices are out of reach.
▪️ Watch for displacement. If screens are crowding out everything else — that's the signal, not necessarily the hour count.

Questions about your child's screen habits? That's exactly the kind of conversation our Zest physicians make time for.

Happy Father’s Day to the ultimate coaches, pretend-play experts, and bedtime-story narrators! 📖 🦁

Today, we’re celebrating the men who teach our kids how to be brave, how to stay curious, and—of course—how to tell a perfectly timed dad joke.

At Zest Pediatrics, we know that a father’s role is vital to a child’s physical and emotional wellness.

Thank you for being the protector, the playmate, and the partner in health. 💙

Sending a huge "Zesty" shoutout to all the dads making the world a brighter place for their kids.

Enjoy your day (and hopefully a little peace and quiet)! ☕️⛳️
