Cancer Trials Explained Simply

Hey friends 👋

You’ve probably seen big numbers about cancer clinical trials at UPMC Hillman —

1,691 patients, 374 active trials, etc.

But here’s the simple version (no fancy medical talk):

Clinical trials = the real tests that check if new cancer treatments actually work and are safe.

These are the studies that have helped turn cancer from a death sentence into something many people survive.

Where does the money come from?

It’s a mix like a pizza:
• Big slice = Government money (through the National Cancer Institute)
• Another slice = Drug companies testing their new meds
• Smaller slices = Donations, foundations, and UPMC itself

The government part is huge because it funds the innovative, early ideas that drug companies often won’t touch yet.

Who can cut the funding?

Congress and the President control the big government checkbook. If they reduce or delay that money, many trials (especially the new, creative ones) can slow down or stop.🛑
Why should we care?

These trials are how we get better treatments tomorrow.
When funding gets shaky, real people — maybe your mom, uncle, neighbor, or even you — lose access to cutting-edge options.

The real question is:
Which specific trials and research teams are most at risk right now?
That’s where we need to pay attention and speak up together.

August 2025, Soup for Hope was still mostly an idea, a belief that community health, storytelling, and connection could become something bigger. There wasn’t much infrastructure, no roadmap, and honestly a lot of uncertainty.

Fast forward to now, and it’s incredible to see the growth—not just in visibility, but in purpose, partnerships, and people. From community events to conversations around women’s health, research, advocacy, and storytelling, this journey has become larger than I ever imagined.

Seeing moments like this with Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation is a reminder that meaningful work grows one relationship, one conversation, and one act of trust at a time.

Grateful for every person who believed in the mission along the way. Community health truly matters. ❤️
