Finding Home at Heritage Woods
For Bill, home has always been about heart, hustle, and high energy. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Bill spent most of his life working as a painter. His fondest memories are tightly woven into the iconic moments of Chicago sports—cheering on the White Sox World Series win, celebrating the Bears’ Super Bowl victory, and tracking the Bulls’ championship runs and Blackhawk Stanley Cups. Beyond his passion for sports, Bill was known as a great dancer in his younger years, and to this day, he still loves kicking back to good rock music.
Before finding his current community, Bill was living in skilled care, where he felt deeply unhappy. Looking for a fresh start, a social worker referred him to Heritage Woods of Plainfield. Bill explored the website, scheduled a tour, and stayed for lunch. Right away, he was impressed by the delicious food, immaculate cleanliness, and the warm, friendly atmosphere from both the staff and residents. Making a major transition from skilled care meant Bill arrived without furniture or toiletries, but the team at Heritage Woods stepped in immediately to provide everything he needed to set up his new apartment.
Now a resident for over seven years, Bill has truly thrived in his environment. He deeply values the privacy and independence the community affords him. While he likes keeping to himself most days, you can often spot him relaxing on the back patio, enjoying the fresh air and listening to his favorite music. He also loves striking up sports conversations with the staff. Perhaps the most unexpected triumph since moving in is that Bill regained the ability to walk independently without restrictions—a milestone that brought him immense joy and reinforced that moving to Heritage Woods of Plainfield was the absolute right choice.
When asked what “home” means to him today, Bill sums it up simply and powerfully: “a clean, friendly place to live, where people actually care about you.”
