It's National Assisted Living Week, and part of why the week exists is that most folks don't actually know what assisted living is.

So here's a plain answer about what our Texas homes offer — including the one most families have never heard of.

Assisted living. A house, not a facility. Three home-cooked meals at one table, help with bathing and dressing offered privately, medication management, housekeeping and laundry, caregivers around the clock including overnight. A handful of people living together, which is the part that makes the whole thing work.

Respite care. This is the one families miss. It's a short-term stay — days or weeks, not permanent. Your parent moves in, gets the same care any resident gets, and goes home.

Families use it when the caregiver needs a break. When surgery or a work trip or a wedding interrupts the usual arrangement. After a hospital stay. And — the one nobody thinks of — to find out. If your family's been going round and round for months about whether a move is right, two weeks answers that better than two more months of talking about it.

Memory care, at select Texas homes, for residents living with Alzheimer's or dementia.

If you've been running on fumes and what you need isn't a permanent answer but two weeks of sleep — say so when you call. It's a real service and nobody's going to think less of you for asking.

Sunday is Grandparents Day. It's also day one of National Assisted Living Week — and that overlap was built on purpose.

NCAL started the week in 1995 and set it to open on Grandparents Day every year. It begins on the one Sunday families are already showing up.

This year's theme is "Shining Through the Years." Look at the word: shining, not shone. Not a look back at a life that's mostly over. The light is still on.

The theme honors residents — and the people who keep that light on. That second part doesn't get written about much.

It's the caregiver who figures out without being told that he's taken his coffee black with two sugars since 1968. Who knows which resident gets restless around four and quietly finds her something to do at ten till. Who asks about the same photograph for the third time because she knows which one gets the good story out of him.

It's whoever's awake in that house at three in the morning. The only reason a family finally sleeps through the night is that somebody else is sitting up. Nobody ever notices that job going well.

Come see a home this week. Bring the grandkids Sunday.

Home care. Assisted living. Skilled nursing. Most families assume it's one scale — a little help on one end, a lot on the other.

It isn't. They're three different answers to three different problems.

Home care sends somebody to the house he already lives in. Assisted living means moving into a place where the help is part of daily life. Skilled nursing is a licensed medical facility with nurses on site around the clock.

So the question isn't "how much help does he need." It's what's actually broken.

Does the house still work? If he gets around fine and sleeps through the night, home care may be exactly right — and we'll tell you that.

Has the house become the problem? Stairs he's got no business on, a bathroom you can't make safe, nights with nobody there, days where he doesn't talk to a soul? More hours won't fix a building, and they won't fix being alone.

Does he need a caregiver or a nurse? That one's for his doctor, not a brochure.

You never called it caregiving.

You called it checking on Mama. Running her to the doctor. Handling the yard while you were out there anyway. Then it was the mail, the bills, the pills, the appointments, the two-hour drive most Saturdays, and the phone face-up on the nightstand in case it rings.

You've never once used the word. But it has a name, and 63 million Americans are doing it right now — about one in four adults, averaging 27 hours a week.

Here's the number worth sitting with: one in five of them rate their own health as fair or poor.

So, honestly — when did you last see your own doctor? Not scheduled it. Went.

Football starts back in a couple of weeks. Count how many you made it to last year.

Labor Day weekend is nearly here, and for a lot of families it's the one weekend everybody actually lands in the same place. If there's a conversation your family has been dancing around since spring, that's usually when it gets said.

We wrote something honest about it — including what you told her once, and what you actually meant by it.
