“What makes the ARCHER trials exciting is that vonaprument is being evaluated with the potential to directly preserve and protect vision, rather than simply slowing the growth of lesions. This could be a significant step forward in our treatment approach to geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to dry AMD, and we look forward to learning more through the Phase 3 study.”
– Ashkan Abbey, MD, Director of Clinical Research for Dallas, Texas Retina

Dr. Abbey recently presented baseline characteristics from the Phase 3 ARCHER II clinical trial at The Retina Society’s 59th Annual Scientific Meeting in Los Angeles.

The global ARCHER II study is evaluating vonaprument (ANX007), an investigational intravitreal C1q inhibitor. The Phase 3 trial is now fully enrolled with 659 patients, and our team at Texas Retina had the privilege of enrolling a large number of patients in the study.

“The most compelling finding of the SALWEEN study is that faricimab monotherapy produced a very high degree of control of the underlying polypoidal lesions and maintained that control despite exceptionally long treatment intervals.”
– Ashkan Abbey, MD, Texas Retina

Dr. Abbey shared his perspective on the Phase 3b/4 SALWEEN study evaluating VABYSMO® (faricimab-svoa) for the treatment of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in the current issue of Ocular Surgery News on Healio. PCV is an aggressive subtype of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

When a macular hole doesn’t close after surgery, treatment can be especially challenging. Texas Retina’s Dr. Rene Choi has developed a new surgical technique designed to address these complex cases.

Recently published in Retinal Cases & Brief Reports, Dr. Choi’s case report describes how he uses small grafts of retinal tissue to help close a persistent macular hole. In the reported case, the patient’s best-corrected visual acuity improved from 20/200 to 20/50 five months after surgery.

Dr. Choi co-authored the report with Anirudh Gadicherla and Amirmohammad Shafiee, two medical students he mentors at TCU’s Anne Burnett School of Medicine.

She joined Texas Retina four years ago after completing her vitreoretinal surgery fellowship and ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, one of the top-rated eye hospitals in the country.

Dr. Laura currently cares for patients in Texas Retina’s Dallas Main, Rockwall and Denton offices and believes establishing compassionate and meaningful relationships with her patients is crucial.
