Plagiocephaly and Torticollis... what’s the difference? This is a common question we get asked! Think Plagiocephaly = head shape and Torticollis = neck tightness. Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Plagiocephaly could save you lots of headache further down the road. Approximately 50% of babies will have some type of head flattening- the only way to fix head flattening is through strategic repositioning or a helmet. The sooner a parent is able to recognize those signs and start intervening through one of the routes mentioned above, the better outcomes their baby will have. Early intervention is key 🔑

Babies should be rolling to from back to belly through both sides between months 4-6! Rolling is essential in development with benefits of improved core strength, crossing midline skills, sensory regulation, and even cognitive development. Not to mention, it’s their first time being able to move freely among their spaces! If you feel like your baby is behind in rolling, your best option would be to contact a pediatric occupational or physical therapist. In the mean time, try out this fun rolling boot camp ⬆️

Ever notice your baby tilting their neck pretty far like the baby on the left? If that’s a common thing for them, odds are, they probably have some Torticollis. Torticollis is a condition that causes tightening of the SCM muscle often resulting in a tilt and head turn preference. This condition is easily treatable with Occupational or Physical Therapy; however, if it’s left unnoticed and untreated, it could lead to development issues and head flattening. If your worried your baby does this a lot, scroll through your camera roll! See a reoccurring tilt, seek out help from your pediatrician or a local pediatric therapist!

The answer is... because of neck tightness! Your baby most likely has some tightness throughout their neck that is causing them to turn towards only one side. While you may think it’s no big deal they have a preference, be aware that constant pressure to only one side of the head will cause flat spots (aka Plagiocephaly). To prevent this, we need to get baby sleeping to the opposite side as well which can only be done once you start addressing the neck. If you’re noticing these signs, now is a good time to bring it up to your pediatrician and seek an evaluation from a pediatric Physical or Occupational Therapist! Don’t wait- the sooner you start addressing your concern, the better results your baby will have.
