The plastic prescription bottle wasn't a mistake โ€” it was a breakthrough for its time. The amber color blocked UV light to protect chemically sensitive meds. The child-resistant cap cut accidental poisoning rates by 90%.

But 8 billion of them are used in the US every year, and fewer than 1% get recycled. They're too small for most facilities to process, the amber pigment reduces plastic resale value, and the labels are nearly impossible to remove. Whether they go to landfill, are incinerated, or end up in the environment, they carry a cost โ€” one most of us have never thought about.
