"Photography is more than taking a picture," shares Stephen. "It’s about noticing the moments others might pass by."

Meet Ozzy – and his human, Jefrrel – a four-legged member of the Atria San Juan family!

As Resident Services Director, Jefrrel oversees the community’s care departments and is especially passionate about working with residents living with dementia. She says she finds joy in understanding what they’re experiencing and helping them through both the challenges and the moments of joy.

And she has Ozzy, who helps her do just that.

The three-year-old Australian shepherd and trained service dog comes to work with Jeffrel and has quickly become a familiar face around the community. When residents see him, Jeffrel says, “They just brighten up.”

Ozzy can be especially helpful when a resident is having a difficult day. Jefrrel has seen how spending time with him can shift a resident’s mood and help them move toward something positive. He also brings plenty of joy to the team – and even the community’s visiting physician makes a point of seeing Ozzy on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“I love that he brings joy not just to the residents but also to the team,” Jefrrel says.

For Jefrrel, caring for residents is about understanding the person behind the challenges and finding opportunities for connection. Sometimes, that connection has four legs and a wagging tail. 🐾

This recognition celebrates employees who consistently go above and beyond to create exceptional experiences for residents, families, and coworkers.

Out of the many outstanding nominations submitted across Atria, Cortnie stood out for her genuine commitment to service and the positive impact she makes every day at Atria Canyon Creek.

Cortnie has been with Atria for just over 3 years, her impact on our community has been felt from day one. She arrives each day with a smile, a positive attitude, and a true “let’s get it done” spirit. Cortnie is someone who helps keep things moving, steps in wherever she is needed, and approaches each day with energy and enthusiasm.

Rain or shine, weekend or holiday, Cortnie continues to show up ready to serve our residents. Her dedication goes beyond simply completing her responsibilities, she takes the time to make each resident feel seen, valued, and special.

Cupid’s arrow struck Al and Stella 74 years ago, and it’s been love ever since! ❤️

What is the key to such a long and happy marriage? "We spend a lot of quality time together," shares Stella. "And we give each other space to follow our individual passions."

At Atria Park of Vintage Hills, Marsha's apartment is a testament to her SoCal lifestyle.

Marsha, an accomplished swimmer, and her late husband, Jerry, both grew up in La Jolla, where Jerry loved surfing, fishing, sailing and diving.

"He was a Seabee in the Navy and served in Vietnam," Marsha shares. He courageously rescued four Marines from drowning while surfing. "It earned him consideration for a Purple Heart."

Marsha keeps his surfboard proudly displayed in her apartment – a reminder of their life together and the adventures they shared.

Now, Marsha is creating new memories of her own at Atria Park of Vintage Hills in the sunshine of Temecula.

Things got a little saucy at Atria Briarcliff Manor – pasta sauce, that is! Residents joined Chef Leah and her family for a hands-on lesson in making and jarring homemade pesto and red sauce. Each resident walked away with a jar of their own!

A tall drink of water is just what our outdoors needed. The rains quenched our thirst.

We are situated on over 14 acres and full of wildlife from gorgeous Red Tail Hawks that soar through the sky, to brilliant red Cardinals, we've seen a Turtle or two and even a Blue Heron.
Come see our gardens where we grow fresh tomatoes, basil, thyme, mint and so much more.

Apollo, the monarch butterfly, took flight! 🧡🦋

The residents at Atria Center City raised Apollo from a tiny egg on a milkweed plant, watching as he went through the incredible journey: first into a hungry caterpillar, then a chrysalis and finally a beautiful butterfly.

Residents gathered around to say goodbye to Apollo as he was released into the wild.

We served it up Southern style at our Taste of the Carolinas events.

We enjoyed BBQ brisket served with collard greens, mac and cheese and corn bread. And don’t forget about dessert – we had classic blackberry cobbler!

To top it off, we watched the sweet Southern classic, The Notebook!

We can't wait to see – and taste – the cuisine from our destination next month!

“Engage Life means finding joy," says Sarah, an Engage Life Program Instructor at Atria Newport Beach. "It means making time for our residents who make me smile, even on hard days. It means being present and appreciating the moments I get to share with them. Getting to make those memories with them at this moment in life.”
Sarah was recently recognized as Employee of the Month, and it's easy to see why. Her passion and attention to residents' needs have made her indispensable to her team.

She shares that working in senior living has taught her an important life lesson: to slow down.

"It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of daily life and work. But when a resident calls you over and asks you to sit for a minute, everything shifts." Those little pauses help her refocus and remember the purpose behind what she does every day.

Sarah, thank you for reminding us that Engage Life isn’t just about what we plan or the places we go. It’s about being present, slowing down, laughing together and finding joy in the people right in front of us.

Atria San Juan showed off its wild side with a visit from the Lifestyle Cycles Riding Group and Black Sheep Motorcycle Ministry For Christ.
