✨ Here is a small thing that turns out to be a big thing: you do not have to plan anything.

No packing lunches. No figuring out where to eat between sessions. No one asking what's for breakfast. On Saturday of the October weekend, we handle it. Continental breakfast when you arrive. A full lunch in the middle of the day. Coffee whenever you need it.

We do this on purpose. When couples are hungry, rushed, or making decisions about logistics, they are not present with each other. Take those decisions off the table and something opens up. You get to just be two people at a table, working on your marriage, being taken care of for a change.

✨ Our virtual cohort wrapped this past weekend, and we are still thinking about it.

There is something that happens when couples stop managing each other and start learning together. You can hear it. The tone changes. That happened on Zoom, and we are grateful for it.

And here is what we know from doing this work for two decades: in a room, it goes further. A screen shows you one face at a time. A room lets you feel the pause before your spouse answers. It lets you turn your chair, take their hand, and practice the thing you just learned while someone trained is standing close enough to help you get it right.

That is what October is for.

Gottman calls that gridlock. It usually means the disagreement is sitting on top of something deeper: a dream, a fear, or a value that has never been fully heard.

✨ Truth was never intended to make us feel superior. Truth was intended to make us more like Christ.

And yet all of us can be tempted to use truth in unhealthy ways. To win. To control. To impress. To dominate. To prove a point. When that happens, truth stops serving redemption and starts serving the ego.

Paul's counsel is clear: "The Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness" (2 Timothy 2:24-25).

Something I have observed over and over in counseling: curiosity creates connection, while pride creates distance. Emotionally mature people seek understanding before judgment. They ask questions. They listen. They remain teachable.

So the next time you encounter disagreement, ask yourself: am I speaking for redemption, or am I speaking for recognition? That question can reveal a great deal about our motives.

The question is not simply whether we are right. The question is what our truth is accomplishing.

✨ Have you ever been right and still wrong?

Most of us genuinely value truth. We want to defend truth, stand for truth, speak truth. That instinct is good.

But truth can be communicated in ways that heal, or in ways that harm. And sometimes the deepest damage in a relationship is not caused by falsehood at all. It is caused by truth delivered without grace.

Paul wrote, "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person" (Colossians 4:6).

Here is something I have learned in the counseling room: people are far more willing to receive a difficult truth when they believe they are respected. Safety increases receptivity. Respect increases openness. Our communication creates the emotional conditions where growth can actually happen.

So before your next hard conversation, ask one question: am I trying to help, or am I trying to win? That single question can completely change your approach.

Winning an argument may feel satisfying. But winning rarely transforms a heart.

✨ Five people read the book. All five told me the same thing, and it wasn't what I expected.

Transformational Communication: Letting the Holy Spirit Shape the Way We Speak now has five advance endorsements — from clinicians, a theologian, and ministry and behavioral health leaders. Not one of them called it a communication book.

Carleton Archer, M.Div., M.P.A., LMFT, wrote: "This is not simply a book about communication—it is a book about discipleship, character, and transformation."

Anthony Roberts, PhD, Professor of Christian Theology at Southeastern University School of Divinity, wrote that "Christian communication is not merely about choosing better words—it is about becoming more like Christ," and that the Holy Spirit "transforms not only the way we speak, but also the hidden desires, assumptions, and pride from which our words emerge."

Amanda Erb Corbin, LCSW-QS, pointed to three lines she says stay with people when emotions run high: "Respect is not optional," "Intimacy should increase honor," "Tone communicates value."

Sit with that one. Intimacy should increase honor. The people closest to us should get our most careful words, not our most careless ones. Most of us have that exactly backwards…

This book is for couples. It is also for pastors, ministry teams, congregations, and anyone who leads people and has noticed that how we speak to each other is a spiritual issue, not a style issue.

Healing is possible. Growth is possible. Not because we try harder to say the right thing, but because the Holy Spirit changes what is underneath the thing we were about to say.

✨ Here is a question that changes marriages: do you know what your spouse is most worried about right now?

In Gottman's research, that kind of knowing has a name. It is called a Love Map. It is the mental picture you carry of your spouse's inner world, their hopes, their stresses, and the small things that make them feel known.
