Doctor Lori's Health Bits

Doctor Lori's Health Bits Nope, not a real doctor. It's what my peeps call me when they want to pick my brain for health & vitamin info. Not medical advice.

I’m a 30-years+ pro in the dietary supplements industry, and here is where I share interesting stuff I learn along the way. This page is where I share all the interesting things I learn in the course of a work day. I am not here to give medical advice. I love science and it's simply fun to share the amazing things I read about in my trade papers, newsletters, and research. I'm a regulatory affairs

consultant in the U.S. dietary supplements industry, based in Southeast Florida. I started in 1987 on the lab bench, then got into Product Development and finally into Quality Assurance. I've learned some things along the way and especially enjoy helping startup brands get set up correctly to be fully compliant with the FDA laws from the beginning. YES, the dietary supplements industry IS regulated, contrary to what the Fake News wants you to believe.

Most laundry detergent contains chemicals I’m trying to avoid. This includes 1,4 dioxane (the EPA says this likely causes cancer), ethoxylated alcohols, synthetic dyes, optical brighteners, SLS/SLES, parabens, phosphates, sulfates & more. Your laundry detergent gets absorbed into your body through...

Today I write about Kratom, which I have never been in favor of using. Users like it because it works in the same pathways as opioids without the illegal price tag. But the stuff is dangerous for that very same reason. There are too many side effects, and it's just not safe. Recently, the primary active compound with a very long name, abbreviated 7-OH, has been synthesized and is being sold illegally as a "dietary supplement". It's not a DS, it's an unsafe chemical and I'm thrilled to see FDA cracking down on it in the marketplace. Don't try this stuff, people. Go outside and hug a tree and get high on life instead.

Not all food additives are bad, and some of them are actually good for you! Case in point Acacia Gum, aka Gum Arabic. A natural thickening agent that is lovingly harvested in Africa (cue video with beautiful music), treasured since Biblical times, and good for you! 90% soluble fiber used by your gut bacteria as a food. Next time you see it on a yogurt or ice cream label, now you know!

BLUE is a most cherished color in flowers, eyes, and cupcakes because it is less common. But do you want to eat the color straight? Well, there are some dummies out there saying online that taking Methylene Blue can improve cognition, slow down alzheimers, or even cure cancer. What these dopes fail to tell you is that taking this stuff without very specific medical needs and doctor supervised dosing can be toxic and do real damage! It is harmful in pregnancy, and it messes up your brain if you're also taking brain meds for anxiety or depression.

Do the smart thing and always fact-check anything you read online or hear in a podcast before acting on or reacting to it. Fake news and misinformation rule cyberspace. Don't be a victim.
