For some children, progress begins before tasting. Food play allows them to explore and interact with food in a low-pressure way, helping reduce anxiety and build comfort over time.

For this activity, we incorporated animals, one of this child’s special interests, to make engaging with the food feel more familiar and motivating.

Instead of turning playtime into a quiz, try narrating what you see, what your child is doing, and what’s happening around them. Every comment is another opportunity for your child to hear and learn language.

Communication doesn’t always begin with spoken words 💬

Some of the most meaningful moments in therapy happen when a child discovers a new way to express their thoughts, wants, needs, and ideas.

Whether communication happens through words, gestures, AAC, or a combination of many tools, every child deserves a way to be heard.

Around age 2, many toddlers are beginning to combine words, follow simple directions, understand more language, and become easier to understand as their communication skills grow.

Every child develops at their own pace, but understanding early speech and language milestones can help families feel more confident in knowing when to seek support for toddler communication or speech delay concerns.
