This year has been a busy one, which means fewer posts, but fuller hands and even fuller hearts. As we settle into this season of gratitude, we find ourselves reflecting on the countless families who have trusted Dakota Midwifery & Women’s Health with their care. Each of you has shaped our year in a meaningful way.

Your strength, your joy, and your stories remind us daily why this work is such an honor. We have had the privilege of walking beside you in some of life’s most sacred moments, celebrating new beginnings, holding space for uncertainty, and supporting you through the tender places of loss and grief. Sitting with you, gently guiding and uplifting you through every high and every low, is at the heart of what we do.

We see the courage it takes to grow, nurture, and bring life into the world. We see the vulnerability you share with us. We see the trust you place in our hands, trust that humbles us every single day.

When you’ve walked a family through a challenging birth or prayed with them over a difficult diagnosis, at the end of the day, they know you are more than just another provider.

Life is full of so many ordinary yet spectacular moments. You won’t be disappointed when you invest in your patients. The rewards will far outlast the treasures of this world.

Side note: Welcome earthside baby Jayde. Your arrival was as eventful as you are cute, baby girl. Those sweet, squishy cheeks are the best…. ❤️.

The Long Road

Sometimes the “long road to here” involves a challenging, hard birth. (I mean, not usually at OUR gentle births😉😉😉, but still…-it could be a thing-). And almost all births seem long at the time. We do DO that. We spin babies and squeeze hips and shake apples. We carry herbs and tinctures and know baby-moving tricks as we encourage mommas to listen to their bodies and to their babies- to DO that. We got you….on that long-seeming road of labor. We also wait patiently for you here, if your previous path was difficult and hard, if you relive a past painful experience wondering if it could’ve or should’ve been different, if midwifery heals some broken part of you from the past.

Other times “the long road” is a remarkable set of circumstances that synergistically combine to bring a rainbow baby earthside after a challenging battle with fertility or loss. (After one or multiple, if the rainbows are doubles or yes, even more.) And we do DO that. We draw labs and balance hormones and work with families through functional, holistic, and nutritional fertility to support the body prior to, throughout, and after pregnancy. We got you on that long road of fertility ups and downs. We understand that long, long road.

But sometimes…. (((sometimes, sweet momma….))) ….sometimes the long road here is nothing less than 1000 individual, unpredictable, heaven sent miracles—-the collective answered prayer of friends and neighbors, family and midwives we haven’t met in person that stand in the gap on this very private road. It’s the hopes and dreams of starry-eyed siblings, the heartfelt tears of parents who’ve held each other and held their breath through many difficult days, a humble (but skilled) midwifery practice who’s God has brought us amazingly…. Right Here Baby.

He made a way. Isn’t she beautiful?

We have a lot of these little miracles on our calendar this year. Thank you Lord for trusting us with such an important task in this world. Hallelujah….

Look at that glow. If you know you know. ❤️

Jessie arrived in South Dakota searching for her first VBAC. After several cesareans, she knew her chances of vaginal birth with a knowledgeable, patient provider were growing slim. She persisted to advocate, interview, and prepare for her vaginal birth as her baby and belly grew closer to that day.

When labor started, her body knew just what to do. Despite previous battle scars, her uterus labored effectively and dilated successfully. Her sweet baby emerged into her husbands capable hands in a set of redemptive circumstances that somehow, in that fraction of a moment, righted the wrongs that had been done previously. What a privilege it is to share these moments with families. 🥹

If you’re seeking a vbac, find a provider who is nothing less than your greatest advocate and fiercest supporter. Ensure their skills are appropriate for the task you are undertaking together. Work cohesively to see your previous births in light of your current opportunity for advocacy and change.

Congratulations Jessie! You did it. We couldn’t be prouder of you. ❤️
