🐾 “Hey… do you have a minute?”

Okay, sometimes the bid for connection is VERY obvious. 😂

But with the people we love, it can be much easier to miss.

A bid for connection is a small attempt to get someone’s attention, affection, support, or interest. It might sound like:

💬 “You’ll never guess what happened today.”
📱 “Come look at this.”
😮‍💨 “Today was rough.”
❤️ “Want to sit with me?”
😂 Or simply sending you a meme they thought you’d like.

When we accept the bid, we turn toward the other person.

We look up from our phone.
We ask the follow-up question.
We laugh at the joke.
We offer the hug.
We give them our attention—even if it’s only for a moment.

Those little interactions may not seem important, but over time, they help build closeness and emotional safety in our relationships.

This weekend, see if you can notice the bids coming from your partner, kids, friends, or family.

And when you can… turn toward them. 💙

Anxiety has a pretty convincing sales pitch:

“Just avoid it. You'll feel SO much better.” 😅

And for a little while? You probably will.

The problem is that avoiding the situation can teach your brain that you escaped something dangerous. The next time you face school, a presentation, a difficult conversation, a phone call, or another anxiety trigger, your brain may sound the alarm even louder. 🚨

And here's something we see often: the anxiety BEFORE something happens can feel much worse than the actual experience.

Instead of waiting until you aren't anxious, try practicing:

💙 Ground yourself in the present.
🌬️ Slow your breathing.
🧠 Challenge the scary prediction.
👣 Break the situation into smaller steps.
➡️ Then move forward—even if some anxiety comes with you.

The goal isn't necessarily “I won't feel anxious.”

A more helpful goal can be:

“I can feel anxious and still do hard things.”

Every time we face something safely and discover we can handle it, we give our brain new evidence. 💪

Save this carousel for the next time the anxiety monster starts getting hungry. 👹

🎉 Please help us welcome the newest clinician to the ACCS team — Tatyana Lewis, MA, LPC-Associate! 💙

We’re excited to have Tatyana joining us and bringing additional support to children, teens, adults, and families in our community.

Tatyana has 7 years of experience working with children, with a special understanding of the challenges kids and teens can face at home, at school, and with their peers. Growing up in a rural community herself, she also understands some of the unique realities that come with small-town life.

And as someone who grew up in a first responder family, Tatyana brings a personal understanding of the demands, stress, sacrifices, and victories that can be part of life for first responders and the people who love them. 🚓🚒🚑

Some of the concerns Tatyana works with include:

🌿 Anxiety, depression & anger
🎒 School stress & academic struggles
💬 Social skills & peer relationships
🏡 Family changes, divorce & moving
💙 Grief, trauma & major life changes
🌱 Substance use & misuse
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 First responders & their families

Her approach is warm, interactive, and personalized. Depending on the person sitting across from her, sessions may include conversation, play, creative activities, Sand Tray, CBT, DBT, ACT, and other tools designed to help clients better understand themselves and build skills they can actually use outside the therapy room.

And when she’s not working? You might find Tatyana reading, crocheting, playing board games, spending time with friends and family, or watching Netflix with her cats. 🐱📚🧶

Tatyana will offer evening appointments Tuesday–Thursday and Saturday appointments, giving families additional options outside traditional school and work hours.

We’re so happy to have you at ACCS, Tatyana! 💙

August Myth of the Month
Myth: Therapy means I failed.
Truth: Support is strength.
You can be strong and still need support.
You can be grateful and still be overwhelmed.
You can love your family and still need space to breathe.
Therapy is not failure. It is care.

🤧📚 THIS WEEK’S GIVEAWAY: Because back-to-school season brings more than homework…

New teachers. New routines. Early mornings. Packed schedules.

And, apparently, every germ known to mankind.

This week, we’re sending our clients home with a little back-to-school self-care kit: tissues + Emergen-C!

It’s also your reminder that taking care of yourself during a busy transition doesn’t have to be complicated.

💧 Stay hydrated.
😴 Protect your sleep.
🍎 Eat regularly.
🧼 Wash those hands.
🌿 Give yourself downtime when you need it.
💙 And remember that adjusting to a new routine takes time—for kids AND adults.

Mental and physical wellness are connected, and sometimes self-care really is as simple as recognizing that your body needs a little extra attention.

✨ Clients, grab one while you’re in the office this week!

🛏️ Mental health tip: Make your bed in the morning.

It sounds almost too simple, but when you’re struggling with depression, your environment can make a difference.

Making your bed can:
✨ Give you one quick win first thing in the morning
✨ Add a little structure to your routine
✨ Make crawling right back into bed slightly less tempting
✨ Help turn your bedroom from an all-day retreat back into a place for rest

And on the really hard days? Making the bed might be enough of an accomplishment all by itself. 💙

Of course, this advice apparently does not apply to Bubbles.

Make the bed. Add the pillows. Arrange the blankets perfectly…

🐶 Bubbles will find a way.

🏈📚 Backpacks, school bells & Friday night lights are back!

We’ve given the office a little seasonal refresh to celebrate the start of a new school year—and one of our favorite parts of fall in Atascosa County: football season! 🏈✨

Whether your family is settling into new routines, heading back to the classroom, spending Friday nights under the stadium lights, or doing a little bit of ALL of it… we’re cheering you on.

Here’s to a great school year for our students, parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, and everyone who helps our local schools feel like a community. 💙

And if the transition back to school feels a little more stressful than exciting? That’s okay, too. New routines can take time.

🍎 New school year.
🏈 New season.
💙 Same cozy space waiting for you at ACCS.

Back-to-school anxiety can show up as irritability, trouble sleeping, stomachaches, headaches, withdrawal, or refusing to talk about school. It may look like an attitude problem when your teen is actually feeling overwhelmed. 🎒

Parents can help by listening without rushing to fix the problem, making routines more predictable, practicing coping tools, and focusing on one manageable step at a time.

The goal is not to remove every nervous feeling. It is to help your teen learn, “I can feel anxious and still move forward.”

When anxiety continues to grow, causes school refusal, or begins interfering with sleep, relationships, eating, or daily life, additional support may help.

At Atascosa Counseling and Consultation Services, we provide personalized support for teens and families navigating anxiety, school stress, and life transitions.

📚 More study time does not always lead to better learning.

Students often feel like they need to sit with their books for hours, but focused and active study habits can be much more effective.

A few skills that may help:

⏰ Study at a regular time
🪑 Use a consistent, low-distraction space
🎯 Choose one clear goal for each session
⏳ Work in shorter blocks with breaks
✍️ Write, quiz yourself, or explain what you learned
😴 Support learning with sleep, food, movement, and rest

The goal is not to create a perfect routine overnight. Start with one small change and notice what helps.

Every student learns differently, so the best study plan is one that can be adjusted to fit their needs, schedule, and learning style. 💙
