It's that time of summer when we start hearing (or saying), "Summer is going by too fast." "I haven't done everything I wanted to do."

Take a breath.

Summer isn't over yet.

Meteorologically, summer ends on August 31, marking the end of the three warmest months of the year. Many people think of Labor Day as the unofficial end of summer—the close of vacations and the return to school and familiar routines. Astronomically, summer doesn't end until September 22, when the autumn equinox marks the changing of the seasons.

No matter when you think of summer ending, one thing remains true: We have today.

And today is enough.

Rather than focusing on everything you haven't done, gently ask yourself:

What is one small way I can enjoy summer today?

Maybe it's waking up a little earlier and soaking in the morning light.

Perhaps it's eating breakfast outside, picking flowers from your garden, or savoring fresh peaches, tomatoes, and corn while they're still in season.

Open the windows and let the warm breeze drift through your home. Go for a bike ride, a walk, a hike, or a swim. Find a place to sit and watch the sunset. Gather your favorite people. Create a memory that doesn't require a plan—just your presence.

Yoga teaches us that peace isn't found in yesterday or tomorrow.

It's found here.

In this breath.

In this moment.

In this day.

Summer isn't measured by how much we accomplish or how many items we check off a list. It's found in the quiet moments when we slow down enough to notice the beauty that's already here.

Simply be present for it.

May you savor each day, breathe in this beautiful season, and notice the simple gifts that summer still has to offer.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the purpose of yoga—or perhaps, more accurately, the purpose of life itself. Then, this morning, while doing the New York Times Mini Crossword, the answer was right there: Inner Peace.

That simple phrase captures what so many of us are searching for. It's also what I wish for each of you at the end of every class: "From my heart and home to each of yours, wishing you inner peace today and always."

Yes, yoga transforms the physical body. It increases flexibility, builds strength, improves balance, enhances joint mobility, reduces inflammation, and supports healthy posture. We often notice these changes first because they are visible and measurable.

But yoga's gifts extend far beyond the physical.

Mentally, yoga cultivates focus and presence. It sharpens memory, improves concentration, and helps us make clearer, more thoughtful decisions. It teaches us to let the constant chatter of the mind fade into the background while bringing the awareness of the breath into the foreground, creating space between our thoughts and our responses.

Emotionally, yoga helps regulate the nervous system, easing the fight-or-flight response that so many of us live with every day. It encourages self-awareness, allowing us to recognize our emotional patterns and respond with greater compassion rather than reacting out of habit. Over time, we become more resilient, more patient, and more at ease with ourselves.

Spiritually, yoga invites us into the present moment. It asks us to release regrets about the past and worries about the future, returning again and again to the only place life is actually happening: right here, right now. Through that practice, we often discover greater patience, kindness, gratitude, intuition, and clarity. We develop a deeper respect for ourselves, for one another, and for the interconnectedness of all life. We learn the freedom that comes from letting go of what we cannot control while remaining open to hope and possibility.

Yoga isn't simply about touching your toes or mastering a pose. It is a practice of becoming more aware—of how we move, how we breathe, how we respond to challenges, how we treat ourselves and others, and how fully we inhabit each moment.

When we weave together the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of yoga, they all point toward the same destination—not perfection, but inner peace.

Perhaps that has been yoga's purpose all along. Beyond the poses, beyond the strength and flexibility, yoga offers us a path back to ourselves. Through mindful movement, conscious breath, and present-moment awareness, we cultivate a sense of steadiness that doesn't depend on external circumstances.

The way we practice on the mat often reflects the way we move through life. When we learn to meet a challenging pose with patience instead of frustration, to soften rather than force, to find balance after wobbling, and to return to the breath whenever the mind wanders, we are practicing skills that extend far beyond yoga. We begin to approach life's challenges with greater resilience, presence, compassion, and trust.

Inner peace isn't something we achieve once and then hold onto forever. It is a practice—one we return to each time we step onto the mat, take a breath, and choose to be fully present. As we carry those lessons off the mat and into our relationships, our work, our homes, and our daily lives, yoga becomes not just something we do, but a way of being.
