If someone you know and love is experiencing a mental health crisis, be mindful and watch for:

1. Sudden changes in mood
2. Isolating or withdrawing
from others
3. Inability to perform
daily tasks (like getting
out of bed, showering,
going to work)
4. Paranoia
5. Psychosis (like delusions
or hallucinations)
6. Feelings of agitation
anger or violence

Someone who is struggling might also be thinking about su***de. They might be:

1. Talking about being a
burden to others.
2. Talking about wanting to
die
3. Expressing hopelessness
or having no reason to
live.
4. Expressing feelings about
being trapped or being in
unbearable pain.
5. Increasing their use of
alcohol or drugs.
6. Experiencing extreme
mood swings

The best way to help, is to start the difficult conversation about mental health. When you are ready, let’s talk.

One choice doesn’t define you.
Have you ever noticed 1 less-than-helpful choice can spiral into a whole day? That’s your brain falling into all-or-nothing thinking—a common thought distortion where 1 “off” moment feels like total failure.

But here’s the truth: Progress isn’t built on perfection, but rather on your next choice.

We often have to help families understand what family therapy is and how it can benefit their family. Family therapy narrows in on the relationships, with the goal of understanding and validating the experiences of all family members. This approach helps bring clarity to all relationships and can foster repair and closeness. Family therapists believe that problems exist between people, not within people.

When dealing with addiction a family therapist explores with the family how substance use is embedded in a cycle of interaction within the family. Family therapists provide education about substance use for the whole family and support family members in reducing unhelpful behaviors and increasing effective behaviors.

Our family therapists offer both live and virtual appointments and are ready to help.

What are the benefits of Family Therapy in addiction treatment? It improves treatment retention, repairs broken trust, and stops unhealthy enabling behaviors. It treats addiction as a whole-family issue, rather than an isolated problem. The Recovery Connector has Family Therapy available both virtually and in-person. When you are ready, let’s talk.

Often therapy works for some but not others. Success in therapy has nothing to do with how good the therapist is, but rather success is directly tied to the individual’s level of honesty. Their commitment to being honest and engaging in a process of looking at themselves. People can spend years in therapy and not get anywhere, because without honesty change cannot happen.

Committing to one small action restores a sense of control. It reminds you that even after a disruption, you can still choose your next step. The smaller it is, the easier it is to follow through and begin rebuilding momentum.

Everyone stumbles. What builds lasting change is the decision to re-engage—again and again. Learn from it. Reset quickly. Take 1 small step. This is how setbacks become comebacks.

Karen O'Connor Bownes,
Honestly, you're one of the very 1st persons who I've ever met, that understands the whole person concept! I can't thank you enough for what you're doing: re-awareness, education and complete support for the families and loved ones of the patient. Great stuff!!
