3 different patients today, each with years or decades of vertigo. Each had many thousands $$$ in medical tests, all negative. I quickly found structural imbalances in all three, one, a pelvic imbalance, with glute weakness, second a weak foot from an ankle sprain 60 years ago (!) (anyone with a bunion or pronation on one or both feet, take note....) and third, an old shoulder instability , all three leading to neck and jaw muscle imbalances, torquing the cranium..... and three cases of chronic vertigo are resolved quickly, and non invasively with my treatment and simple, specific home exercises. Made my day! (and theirs too..!)

Speaking of google and "search engine optimization" - the more "likes and responses posts on this page get, the better we show up in Google etc. So please, look through the super informative posts I've made and click on "like" , or feel free to ask any question you might have. Thanks!

Migraines (and Vertigo)

In my three decades (wow!) of practicing chiropractic, and Applied Kinesiology, what I now call Diagnostic Muscle Testing, I am continually learning and putting together the big picture. That picture is being able to quickly, and precisely, find the reason for a person’s pain, and more importantly, how to fix it. This past year I have had a good number of patients with decades of weekly migraines; in some cases 50 years or more of migraines once or several times each week, as well as some patients suffering from daily vertigo.

Sadly, the medical state of the art approach hasn’t helped in any of these cases. In my view, the medical toolbox just isn’t equipped to look at what I have found is the root cause of migraine headaches (and often vertigo as well), in the vast majority of cases. That is; structural imbalances. Chronically tight muscles constantly pulling on various bones in the skull cause stress on the various parts of the brain, and it is easy to imagine this causing some problems, most commonly migraines, headaches, and vertigo. The most common muscle over contractions I have found related to this are; upper trapezius muscle, pulling on the occiput and literally twisting the skull; scalene muscles, tightening up one (or both) sides of the neck, and the medial, or internal, pterygoid muscle, an important jaw closer and lateral deviator, as well as the masseter muscles, very powerful jaw closers, or clenchers.

Using diagnostic muscle testing, I have been able to usually find, and help the patient fix the root causes of these muscle imbalances. Keeping in mind that everything in the body is connected to everything else, tight jaw muscles are almost always a result of a pelvic, gluteus muscle weakness / inhibition, causing a sacroiliac instability, often coming from a foot or ankle injury, often decades ago. Upper trapezius muscle tightness (the “cranium twister”) is almost always a result of an old shoulder / collarbone injury. Jaw imbalances, in the form of chronically over contracted pterygoid muscles, which cause TMJ problems and more importantly pull on the sphenoid, a cranial bone, make one eye appear lower, and also cause cranial stress, and often headaches, migraines, and often vertigo as well.

The good news is; these patterns are all fixable, with simple home exercises, home massages, sometimes a set of orthotics for the shoes, and a couple of basic chiropractic adjustments. It is amazing to us at the office, how many patients we see with these complaints who “have seen the best medical guys in the country” who were unable to help at all, and we almost always find the fix, and see gradual steady improvements within a few weeks, with continued improvement as the patient gains structural stability, strength, balance, and resiliency. I have had many patients just this year who had complaints like “vertigo every day” for decades, “migraine headaches every week for 50 years”, “tension headaches every day for decades” who are now done dealing with these complaints. With older patients, who have had the underlying imbalances for a long long time; the improvements have been, understandably, gradual. And in younger patients, the improvements have often been seemingly almost instantaneous.

In my own case, an old R ankle sprain at age 9 led to a series of muscle imbalances that ultimately caused chronic R side sciatic pain, as well as R side neck tightness and shoulder and upper arm pain. Using what I have learned, I have finally fixed it, and have no pain.

The treatment in my practice is simple, noninvasive, and totally without adverse effects. The big thing is specific home exercises, and specific massage, and very often some support for the weak foot with orthotics. It is very rare to see a case where this approach hasn't helped. I am happy to have been able to help many patients escape their often decades long suffering with migraines, tension headaches, and vertigo many of them have suffered.

a couple of recent Google reviews on our chiropractic / diagnostic muscle testing practice webpage http://www.chiropractorplymouth.com/

These reviews and five star ratings on google and Yelp definitely help new patients find us!

"I was having trouble with my knee and left leg from running - this was an issue that was ongoing for half a year. I saw a variety of other health practitioners, some were more helpful than others. When I visited Dr Tag, he diagnosed the issue (something to do with my sciatic nerve getting out of place, causing one of my muscles to "turn off"), and gave me some simple exercises to do every day. I went back a couple of times and got a new exercise and an insert for my right shoe. After a few visits the issue cleared up, and I was able to start running again. His methods seemed a bit unorthodox at first, but they were very effective."

Response from the owner
Thanks for the great review, Craig, glad I could help! Very common for us to hear they've tried a bunch of other docs; MD and chiro, and we finally found the real cause and fix. All , usually, in a couple of visits and, an occasional followup.
Dr Steve Tag

"Intelligent and knowledgeable professionals that go beyond the average chiropractor visit. Dr. Tag worked to address the root of my pain and answered all my questions. He gave me doable exercises to complete at home, as opposed to visiting each week for an adjustment. Highly recommend if you feel like you’ve tried every solution and nothing is working. Dr. Tag provides great suggestions and guidance."

"hands down, the best that I've been to, and I've been to a lot of them."

true story- me (Dr. Steve Tag); what I had going on, and how I fixed it..

I sprained my R ankle when I was 9. Five decades ago.
I had a lifetime of R knee pain, low back pain, R side sciatic pain, and neck pain and R shoulder pain.
I fixed it. I had a bunion on my R foot; it’s gone. The pain is all gone, too.
You break a bone; your body fixes it so it’s stronger. Sprain a joint though, and it stays unstable, often for decades. Unless you fix it. These old injuries are fixable. The most common patterns we see, and treat on a daily basis, are ankle and foot injuries, shoulder sprains, and pelvic imbalances/instabilities. These are very often old, forgotten injuries, but they cause big muscle imbalances that lead to low back pain, neck pain, knee, hip, and shoulder pain. More importantly, these imbalances also cause arthritis; wear and tear type degenerative changes in the joints of the spine and extremities.
Any pronation in a foot, any knee problems, any sciatic or low back pain, neck pain, shoulder weakness or pain, or arm and hand problems, there is a reason, and a fix. I quickly find the reason, the weakness, instability, and imbalance, using diagnostic muscle testing, and show you how to fix it.

Support, strengthen the foot
Stabilize the ankle
Strengthen and stabilize the pelvis (glutes, hamstrings, psoas, etc.)
stabilize and strengthen the shoulders
Re-learn how to walk correctly to re-integrate everything
make sure all spine vertebrae can move properly

Exercises depend upon what is weak. There is often, as part of an injury pattern, an interesting often hidden muscle inhibition we call "reactive muscle", where tight gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, for example, when contracted, shut off gluteus maximus and hamstrings. Trigger points in tibialis posterior will cause long term fibula instability, leading to peroneal nerve irritation (a branch of the sciatic nerve), as well as foot arch weakness. Both of these will inhibit glutes, hamstrings, and lats, and when these are shut off, there is tighness in piriformis, quadratus lumborum, iliopsoas, even scalenes. Exercising muscles that are inhibited can cause more stress than good, so it's kind of tricky. If there's any pronation at all in that foot, it's often very helpful to support the arch with insoles, or Dr. Scholl's Molefoam cut out wedges.
