Seeing an orthopedic specialist does not automatically mean surgery.

An orthopedic evaluation is about getting answers: identifying what may be causing your pain, understanding how it is affecting your daily life, and reviewing the treatment options that fit your diagnosis and goals.

For many patients, the next step may be physical therapy, activity modification, medication, injections, supportive care, or monitoring. Surgery is considered when it is the appropriate treatment not simply because you scheduled an appointment.

The goal is not to push a procedure. It is to build a treatment plan around the individual patient.

Is it sciatica or a back strain?

Lower back pain can be frustrating, especially when you are not sure what is causing it.

A back strain may feel like soreness, tightness, or pain that stays mostly in the back. Sciatica often feels different. It may cause pain, numbness, tingling, or symptoms that travel from the lower back into the buttock or leg.

Knowing the difference can help you understand when rest and conservative care may be enough — and when it may be time to be evaluated.

PBOA’s latest blog breaks down the difference between sciatica and back strain, common symptoms, and when to schedule with the spine team.

Update: Dr. Leckie's family story goes back even further.

After our post about Jackson Leckie’s five-generation connection to Beth Israel, a family historian reached out with a discovery the family did not know.

Jackson’s great-great-great-grandfather, George Orlov, was one of the founders of Beth Israel.

That means Jackson’s volunteer service at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth is not just a five-generation full-circle moment.

It is six generations — all the way back to the beginning of Beth Israel.

A remarkable update to an already meaningful family legacy.

Hip or knee pain has a way of making everyday life feel smaller, shorter walks, fewer stairs, skipped plans, and less time doing the things you enjoy.

But surgery is not always the first step.

Join Dr. Scott Oliver, orthopedic surgeon with Plymouth Bay Orthopedic Associates, for a free virtual discussion on non-surgical options for hip and knee pain. Dr. Oliver will walk through common treatment paths that may include medication, injections, physical therapy, weight management, and when it may be time to see an orthopedic specialist.

This session is designed for patients dealing with hip or knee pain, arthritis, stiffness, mobility issues, or anyone who wants to better understand what options may be available before considering surgery.
