Calm Is a Form of Justice: Aromatherapy as a Pathway to Healing for Those Impacted by the Justice System with Debbie Pullens

"Drawing on my work as founder of the nonprofit Reaching Beyond Bars and my aromatherapy brand Proper Xchange, this session explores how aromatherapy can support individuals impacted by incarceration โ€” both inside facilities and through reentry. I'll cover the modalities we use most (personal inhalers, roll-ons, body lotions, body oils, and pre-diluted blends), specific oils and recipes chosen with safety and facility constraints in mind, and a real-world partnership with Homeboy Industries where product-making itself becomes a therapeutic and vocational practice. I'll close with a look at why our field is aging and practical ways to bring younger practitioners into aromatherapy."

NAHA International Director in Action: Talley Sjoberg Varney ๐Ÿ’œ

Talley Sjoberg Varney serves as the NAHA International Director for Central Asia. Throughout her career she has found herself working in two worlds that are not often connected. One is the world of aromatherapy and holistic health. The other is the international education, corporate and diplomatic world where employees and leaders face constant change, relocation, uncertainty, and stress. Today her work brings these two worlds together in practical and meaningful ways.

Talley is the founder of Clearly Sage Advice & Organics, LLC, where she supports expatriate families, employees and international communities through holistic health, aromatherapy, coaching, and mindfulness. She is a NAHA Level 3 Clinical Aromatherapist, a licensed social worker, and a certified life and management coach and MBSR instructor. A 20-year nomad, her work has taken her across North America, Europe, and Asia, giving her a unique understanding of what it means to build community while living far from home. She is also pursuing a PhD in Philosophy and Psychotherapy, where her research explores holistic approaches to wellbeing.

One of the most rewarding parts of her work has been helping organizations recognize that wellness is not simply another benefit offered to employees. It is part of the culture they create every day. Aromatherapy has a place within that conversation because scent has the ability to influence how people experience a space, prepare for difficult conversations, recover from stressful events, or simply pause long enough to reconnect with themselves. When combined with education, mindfulness, and compassionate leadership, aromatherapy becomes another tool that supports healthier workplaces and stronger teams.

She also enjoys encouraging fellow aromatherapists to look beyond the traditional paths of practice. There is tremendous opportunity to bring our knowledge into businesses, schools, humanitarian organizations, and international communities. Success in these settings requires more than understanding essential oils. It requires listening to organizational needs, speaking the language of business and education, respecting evidence, and demonstrating measurable value. Talley believes when we combine professional aromatherapy with thoughtful strategy, we create opportunities to serve people in places where wellbeing is becoming an essential part of everyday leadership and community rather than an afterthought.

Ponder The Bee: Melissa Teachings About Community, Female Empowerment & Honey with Elizabeth Ashley ๐Ÿ

"From the dawn of time, Mankind has looked at the bee and seen perfection, in the sweetness of its honey, the immaculate form of the hexagons in their comb, and the forward-thinking nature of community.

Perhaps it was the 4th century church father, St John Chrysostom, who encapsulated it best when he said, โ€œThe bee is not loved because she labours, but because she labours for others.โ€ Collecting pollen from thousands of plants, to make honey she will never taste, for the community of the future.

In the spirit of the beehive, the bee should not be viewed as a unit, more as an organ of a much bigger body, the colony. A superorganism, with a highly developed sense of teamwork and democratic process. The colony offers many inspirational examples of how successful communities works collaboratively.

In this presentation, we will:

๐Ÿ’ซExplore why Melissa Officinalis is the voice of the beehive and perhaps why Paracelsus called it the Elixir of Life.

๐Ÿ’ซConsider the attributes of a female driven organism and how we might be similar or different to them

๐Ÿ’ซReflect on some of the ways bees organize power and weigh the opportunities and threats of using those for inspiration.

๐Ÿ’ซExperience the enormous opportunities in liminal spaces and events. Moments, places and people who are not quite one thing or another, bee-coming.

An experiential workshop, headphones and melissa oil recommended.

If you do not have Melissa oil, lemongrass or lemon verbena would work too. Lemon Balm from the garden is also heavenly, lemon balm tea, or even a beeswax candle. It is also fine to arrive empty handed.

Elizabeth Ashley is the author of over 20 aromatherapy manuals including Meeting The Melissae the Ancient Greek Bee Priestesses of Demeter. With over 35 years professional experience, she teaches about both the spiritual aspects of essential oils and their effects on neurotransmission. While she is a clinical aromatherapist, these days she refers to herself more as a โ€œWortcunnerโ€ the old English term for someone who learns plant medicine from the plant spirit itself. One of her master teachers has been the lemon balm plant, that would eventually initiate her into bee shamanism and to become a Melissa priestess. As well as her writing, she has a busy youtube channel. Elizabeth writes under the pen name The Secret Healer and is the UK Director for NAHA.

NAHA Director in Action Revisited: Dr. Jessie Cavanaugh

Dr. Jessie Cavanaugh is the NAHA Director for Tennessee. A Harvard trained clinical researcher, Dr. Cavanaugh has partnered with NAHA on several research studies to fund important clinical studies to investigate the safety and efficacy of essential oils. Since we last visited with her in August 2022, Dr. Cavanaugh has added a fun, but important, practical element to her business, The Neutraceuticals Research Institute (NRI) putting the research into action.

Dr. Cavanaugh is the founder and Principal Investigator (PI) of Nutraceuticals Research Institute (NRI), an independent clinical research organization specializing in botanical and nutraceutical trials. She completed her doctorate by completing a dissertation based on a clinical trial for olfactory interventions for pre-procedural anxiety among children with an autism spectrum disorder, and her post-doctoral clinical trial methodology training comes from Harvard Medical School.

She has published over 30 peer-reviewed studies on essential oil safety, adaptogen efficacy, women's health, immune function, and pediatric aromatherapy. She is the PI on every single study NRI runs.

Dr. Cavanaugh just added The Botanical Lab at NRI. This is a merging of the research institute and the hands-on, applicable learning. Starting this summer, it all happens under one roof. In the back, research assistants and Dr. Cavanaugh bury themselves in protocol methodology, data analysis, and manuscript development. In the front, her team and herself walk you through those discoveries with fully immersive educational experiences.

You can walk up to the Aroma Blend Bar and create a roll-on or therapeutic lotion using formulas directly from their published research. Or the Herbal Blend Bar, where you craft your own salve straight from the literature.

And where the literature isn't fully replicable at home, with elderberry extracts or ashwagandha, for example, you'll have access to the latest education on how to be a smart consumer at the drugstore. Which elderberry products actually match their n=362 clinical trial, the largest and longest ever documented. And which falls short. Theyโ€™ll walk you through formulating complementary products that work alongside those store-bought options.

They have quick lab experiences and fully immersive workshops. Olfactory flights. You can enroll in a study, sign up for their latest Study Abroad trip, or grab some NRI swag. Or pop in, sink into one of their massive navy chairs, and read through their published studies while the researchers who ran them answer your questions.
