There is so much discomfort in letting go and allowing learning to happen. But it is also so important for the overall health of your relationships as your family evolves and grows. Your partner needs to misstep, to be lost, to figure it out, to problem solve. Their growth in confidence will result in freedom for you on the other side of the growth. Your child needs to misstep, to be lost, to figure it out, to problem solve. Their growth in confidence will result in freedom for you on the other side of the growth. They both need to be held in these spaces with you rooting them on without taking over.

You know the moment....your sweet dear child asks for help and you enter auto-pilot help mode and after you think, "what the heck, my child asks for my help with EVERYTHING." The frustration is ok, you aren't a bad parent because you just don't wanna sometimes. But also, having an idea how to nudge these moments in a more productive way (with kindness!) can feel empowering for the next time it comes up. ...now before you come at me I want to note the nuances to this statement....because although I firmly believe kids must learn through doing---I also very much believe in a parent's guidance through decision. When we move through parenting wanting our children to simply "obey" we are doing a great disservice to their ability to learn from their choices and to manage the outcomes of their choices. At the same time, children can become overwhelmed by decision and the responsibility of choice, and it takes our wisdom to know when it is important to take charge. It's a fine balance to find as a parent. But what do you think? Does your child get opportunity regularly to make and learn from their decisions? Comment below!
