Meet the residents! Join us in welcoming our new Graduate Medical Education residents to McLaren Port Huron. This week, we’re welcoming Dr. Fitsum Gemechu, Internal Medicine:

Fitsum Assefa Gemechu is a physician from Ethiopia and a graduate of Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, where he ranked among the top of his class. He has gained diverse clinical experience working as a general practitioner. He currently resides in Toronto, Canada.

His academic interests include cardiology and healthcare leadership. He has contributed to research and published case reports and has been actively involved in community service and leadership initiatives, including organizing health campaigns and supporting underserved patients. Outside of medicine, he enjoys watching English Premier League football, playing foosball and reading novels.

Dr. Gemechu will see patients in the McLaren Port Huron Academic Center for Internal Medicine (1216 Richardson Street, 810-985-2640).

"I want to recognize RN Amy on the 5th floor. My family and I were really having to make difficult decisions in my mother’s care. My mom was ready for hospice services and it was a Sunday evening. Amy went above and beyond to help with that and see that my mom was comfortable. We can’t thank Amy enough."

I am an incoming Family Medicine resident with a strong interest in patient-centered, compassionate care. I am passionate about building meaningful relationships with patients, supporting diverse communities, and continuing to grow as a well-rounded physician. My interests include primary care, chronic disease management, lifestyle counseling, and service to my community.

Hi everyone, I'm Kate! I'm excited to be joining McLaren this year. I grew up in Grosse Pointe, MI and stayed in Michigan for school. I did my undergrad at Michigan State and got my medical degree from Wayne State. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis and hiking. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!
