Understanding Why Hospice Often Discusses a DNR

One question we hear often is:

Does choosing hospice mean you have to sign a DNR?

Not necessarily—but it's an important conversation.

A Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order only means CPR will not be performed if a person's heart or breathing stops. It does not mean stopping care, giving up, or withholding comfort.

Hospice focuses on comfort, quality of life, and honoring a person's wishes. For many people with advanced illness, CPR is unlikely to restore meaningful quality of life and may lead to invasive treatments that don't align with their goals.

A DNR is simply one option to consider based on a person's values and wishes.

At Blue Water Doula Collective, we don't tell families what to choose—we provide education, answer questions, and help people make informed decisions with confidence and compassion.
