Did you know? Modern embalming in America really took off during the Civil War. With so many soldiers dying far from home, families wanted their loved ones brought back for proper burial. Port Jervis men fought in the famous 124th New York Infantry — the “Orange Blossoms” — at battles like Gettysburg and Appomattox.
That same need to return fallen soldiers home helped establish the funeral practices we still use today.
At Knight-Auchmoody we continue the tradition Bob and George started — honoring veterans and caring for their families with dignity and respect.
The front of the funeral home is peaceful today with flowers in bloom. If you need a quiet spot to reflect, you’re always welcome on East Main Street.
To all who served — thank you. We will not forget.
