🌿 “I WAS FINE ALL DAY… WHY AM I FALLING APART NOW?”

You made it through work or school. You handled responsibilities, answered questions, made decisions, and did what needed to be done.

You seemed completely fine.

Then you finally got home… and suddenly you’re exhausted, irritable, overwhelmed, emotional, or completely DONE.

Sometimes we’re so focused on meeting the demands in front of us that we don’t fully recognize how much energy we’re using.

Stress, anxiety, sensory stimulation, social interaction, caregiving, masking, decision-making, and simply pushing through a demanding day can all take a toll—even when we appear to be functioning well.

🌿 Functioning through something doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t affecting you.

Running low on capacity might look like:

🧠 Feeling mentally “done”
🔇 Needing quiet or less stimulation
🌿 Becoming withdrawn
😣 Irritability over small things
🤯 Struggling to make another decision
😴 Feeling completely exhausted
💭 Emotions hitting once the day slows down

And this isn’t limited to adults. A child who holds it together throughout the school day but struggles emotionally at home may be showing you just how much effort the day required.

The aftermath can be information, too.

Instead of only asking, “Did I get through the day?” try noticing:

“What did getting through the day cost me?”

If you regularly crash after appearing “fine,” it may be worth discussing with your mental health provider.

💚 You don’t have to wait until you can’t function anymore for something to be worth discussing.

🌙🧠 “OKAY… BUT HOW ARE YOU SLEEPING?”

—your psychiatric provider, approximately every appointment.

There’s a reason we keep asking. 🌿

Sleep can give your provider valuable information about what’s happening with your mental health—and changes in sleep can affect how you feel and function during the day.

It’s connected with things like:

🌿 Mood
🌿 Anxiety
🌿 Attention and concentration
🌿 Irritability
🌿 Energy
🌿 Memory and thinking
🌿 Overall daily functioning

And when we ask about sleep, we don’t necessarily mean just:

“How many hours did you get?”

We may also want to know:

🌙 What time are you actually falling asleep?
⏰ What time are you waking up?
😴 Are you waking throughout the night?
☀️ Do you feel rested when you wake up?
🥱 Are you sleeping significantly more than usual?
⚡ Are you sleeping much less but still feeling unusually energized?
💊 Did your sleep change after starting or adjusting a medication?
📆 Have you noticed a pattern?

Because “I slept for 8 hours” and “I got 8 hours of restorative sleep” aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Changes in sleep can sometimes accompany mental health symptoms, medication effects, stress, habits, sleep disorders, or physical health concerns—which is why the details matter.

So when Shannon asks about your sleep for what feels like the hundredth time, she isn’t making small talk. 💚

🌿 Sleep isn’t just a side note in mental health. Sometimes it’s one of the clues that helps us understand the bigger picture.

🌿 “IT’S PROBABLY NOTHING…”

How many times have you thought that right before deciding not to mention something to your psychiatric provider?

“It only happens sometimes.”

“It’s not that bad.”

“I can still function.”

“It probably has nothing to do with my medication.”

“This is probably too weird to bring up.”

Okay. Tell us anyway. 💚

You don’t have to decide whether something is important enough, unusual enough, or related enough before bringing it up.

Changes in things like:

🌿 Mood or irritability
🌿 Sleep
🌿 Appetite or weight
🌿 Energy and motivation
🌿 Focus and concentration
🌿 Anxiety or racing thoughts
🌿 Physical symptoms
🌿 Medication effects or side effects
🌿 Or simply feeling different than you normally do

…can all provide useful pieces of the bigger picture.

And bringing something up doesn’t mean you’re saying it must be a symptom of a mental health condition. Sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes another healthcare provider needs to be involved.

But you don’t have to figure that out by yourself before you’re allowed to mention it.

You don’t have to walk into your appointment already knowing what something means.

That’s part of why you’re there.

🌿 Your job is to tell us what you’re experiencing. Our job is to listen, ask questions, and help determine what may be relevant.

So that thing you’ve been telling yourself is “probably nothing”?

Maybe mention it anyway. 💚

🧠💬 THE CONVERSATION: 7 MINUTES.

MY BRAIN PREPARING FOR THE CONVERSATION: 3–5 BUSINESS DAYS. 😂

You have to make a phone call at 2 PM.

It is currently 10:17 AM.

Your brain has already completed six full dress rehearsals.

“Okay, they’ll probably say this… then I’ll say this…”

“Wait. What if they ask THAT?”

Welp. Better restart the entire imaginary conversation from the beginning. 😂

And sometimes the conversation finally happens, everything goes perfectly fine, and your brain STILL isn’t finished:

“Why did I say it like that?”

Replays conversation from four days ago in 4K. 🫠

Mentally rehearsing conversations isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Preparing can help us organize our thoughts, remember what we want to say, and feel more confident going into an important or uncomfortable conversation.

But preparation can turn into rumination when we’re repeatedly running through every possible response, trying to predict exactly what someone else will say, or searching for the “perfect” way to handle an interaction.

🌿 Preparation can be helpful. Trying to predict every possible version of a conversation is exhausting.

Before an important conversation, try narrowing it down to:

💬 What do I actually need to communicate?
🎯 What outcome am I hoping for?
🌿 What part of this is within my control?

And afterward?

Instead of holding a three-hour internal investigation into your tone, facial expressions, word choices, and whether that one pause was weird… 😂

Ask:

“Did I communicate what I needed to communicate?”

If the answer is yes, that may be enough.

Your brain does not need to convene a postgame press conference. 😂

💚 Preparation is helpful. Perfection isn’t required.

💊🌿 “I FEEL BETTER… DO I STILL NEED MY MEDICATION?”

It’s a reasonable question!

You started treatment. Things improved. You’re feeling more like yourself.

So… does that mean it’s time to stop the medication?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Sometimes feeling better is actually a sign that your treatment is doing what we hoped it would do. 👀

Kind of like:

☔ “My umbrella is working great. I’m completely dry… so I guess I don’t need the umbrella anymore.” 😂

Psych meds are obviously a little more complicated than umbrellas, but you get the idea.

There absolutely may be a time when you and your provider decide that reducing or stopping a medication makes sense.

But that decision should be a conversation—not an experiment you run by yourself.

Depending on the medication, suddenly stopping can cause discontinuation or withdrawal symptoms, and symptoms of the condition being treated may return or worsen.

If you’re wondering whether you still need a medication, TALK TO US! 💚

Some great questions to ask:

💊 How long should I stay on this medication?
💊 How will we know if I’m ready to come off?
💊 Would I need to taper it?
💊 What should I watch for if we reduce it?
💊 What if I want to stop because of side effects?

And please tell your provider if you’ve already stopped taking something or changed how you take it.

We’re not here to scold you. 😂 We just need to know what’s actually happening so we can make safe decisions together.

The goal isn’t to keep you on medication forever.

And the goal isn’t to get you off medication as quickly as possible either.

🌿 The goal is an individualized treatment plan that makes sense for YOU.

Never stop or change a prescribed medication without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.

📱🧠 YOU OPENED YOUR PHONE TO RELAX…

And 45 minutes later you’re anxious, irritated, comparing your life to a stranger’s, and somehow emotionally invested in a controversy you didn’t even know existed an hour ago. 😂

Sound familiar?

Scrolling can feel like downtime, but our brains may be taking in a LOT:

📱 Constant stimulation
👀 Comparison with other people
📰 An endless stream of information
😬 upsetting or stressful content
💬 Arguments in the comments
🔄 And an algorithm designed to keep giving you one more thing

That doesn’t mean social media is inherently bad. It can help us laugh, learn, connect with people, find community, and apparently watch 37 consecutive videos of cats knocking things off counters. 😂

But it’s worth noticing:

How do you feel AFTER you scroll?

More relaxed? Connected? Inspired?

Or anxious, inadequate, angry, overstimulated, or completely drained?

🌿 Your feed is something you consume. You’re allowed to be selective about what you feed your mind.

Try:

💚 Muting accounts that consistently make you feel worse
🔕 Turning off notifications you don’t actually need
🌅 Giving your brain a little time before opening social media in the morning
🚪 Leaving the comments section when it stops being fun 😂
📱 Curating your feed toward things that genuinely make you laugh, learn, connect, or feel good

And you don’t have to delete every app, throw your phone into the ocean, and go live in the woods. 😂

Sometimes it’s simply about being a little more intentional with what gets your attention.

TODAY’S MINI CHALLENGE: 📱

Find ONE account that routinely leaves you feeling anxious, angry, inadequate, or drained.

Mute it.

You don’t even have to unfollow them and accidentally start Thanksgiving War III. 😂

Just protect your peace.

🌿🧠 SOMETIMES OVERWHELM LOOKS A LOT LIKE IRRITABILITY.

You’re not crying.
You’re not having a panic attack.
You’re not curled up under a blanket.

You’re just suddenly annoyed by…

EVERYTHING. 😂

Someone asks you a perfectly reasonable question?

Why are you speaking to me.

Your phone keeps making noises?

Absolutely not.

Someone needs you to make ONE more decision?

I have never had an opinion in my life.

The TV is on. Someone is talking. Your clothes feel weird. There are dishes in the sink. You have three things you’re trying to remember—and then someone asks:

“What do you want for dinner?”

And somehow THAT is the thing that sends you over the edge. 😂

Sometimes irritability is the obvious feeling, but underneath it might be:

🌿 Stress
🧠 Mental overload
🔊 Overstimulation
😴 Lack of sleep
📋 Too many demands or decisions
💭 Anxiety
🔋 Simply running out of capacity

That doesn’t excuse treating people poorly—but it can be useful information.

Instead of only asking:

“Why am I so annoyed?”

Try asking:

“What is my brain or body dealing with right now?”

Maybe you need fewer decisions. Less noise. Food. A break. Ten minutes where nobody needs anything from you.

Or maybe the dinner question was simply the final boss. 😂

Learning your signs of overload can help you recognize what’s happening before you reach your limit.

🌿 Sometimes irritability isn’t the whole story. It might be your cue to check in with yourself. 💚

🧠🌿 YOU DON’T HAVE TO BELIEVE EVERY THOUGHT YOUR BRAIN GIVES YOU.

Your brain can be VERY convincing. 😂

“I’m going to mess this up.”

“They’re probably upset with me.”

“I should be doing more.”

“Everyone else handles this better than I do.”

“If I say no, they’ll think I’m selfish.”

“I made a mistake, so clearly I’m terrible at everything.”

Sometimes a thought shows up with so much confidence that we automatically treat it like a fact.

But having a thought doesn’t make it true.

Anxiety can predict the worst-case scenario.

Depression can make the future feel hopeless.

Low self-esteem can turn one mistake into evidence that you’re not good enough.

Past experiences can teach your brain to look for danger even when your current situation is different.

And sometimes your brain is just… dramatic. 😂

The goal isn’t necessarily to force every negative thought into a positive one.

Instead, try getting curious:

🌿 Is this a fact, or is it a fear?
🌿 What evidence do I actually have?
🌿 Am I assuming I know what someone else is thinking?
🌿 Would I speak to someone I love this way?
🌿 Is there another explanation I haven’t considered?

You can notice a thought without automatically accepting it as the truth.

Sometimes one of the most powerful things you can learn to say to your own brain is:

“Okay… but is that actually true?” 👀😂

Your thoughts deserve your attention.

They don’t always deserve your agreement. 💚
