Episode 7☀️ Sunny Shorts: “But They Said Yes…” 🦦

Sunny noticed something.

A child said “yes”… but their body was saying something completely different.

They got quiet. Their shoulders tightened. They pulled away.

“But they said yes,” someone said.

Sunny tilted his head. 🦦

“Did they?”

Sometimes saying “no” is a skill that still needs to be learned. Some kids have had lots of practice following directions—but not nearly enough practice advocating for themselves.

So Sunny practiced some different words:

💛 “No, thank you.”
💙 “I need a break.”
💚 “I don’t like that.”
🧡 “Can we do something else?”
❤️ “Stop.”

And when the child used those words?

Sunny listened.

Because teaching self-advocacy only works when we show someone that their voice actually matters.

Lately we’ve seen a lot of posts and seen feedback regarding how people feel that ABA is abusive, and unfortunately there are companies still out there that still target the old school methods of traditional compliance based ABA. At Sunshine Pathways ABA, we come in with a different approach. ☀️ SUNNY SHORTS Episode 6: “They’re Just Doing It for Attention.” 🦦

“They only do that when I’m busy.”

“They know exactly how to get my attention.”

“If I respond, won’t I just make it worse?”

Sunny hears this one a lot. 💛

But what if we looked at attention-seeking a little differently?

For many kids, attention isn’t “just attention.”

It’s connection.

Sometimes a child hasn’t learned the best way to say:

💬 “Come sit with me.”

💬 “Look what I did!”

💬 “I need help.”

💬 “Can we play?”

💬 “I just want you close.”

So their behavior communicates it instead.

That doesn’t mean we have to give every behavior exactly what it’s asking for.

It means we can teach a better way to ask. 🌱

Sunny might practice:

🦦 Tapping someone’s shoulder
🦦 Saying, “Excuse me”
🦦 Asking, “Can you play with me?”
🦦 Using AAC to request attention
🦦 Waiting briefly when someone is unavailable

And here’s the important part:

✨ We don’t only notice them when something goes wrong.

Give connection during the GOOD moments, too.

Notice the quiet request.

Respond to the appropriate tap.

Celebrate the independent communication.

Make the new skill worth using. 💛

Because sometimes the question isn’t…

❌ “How do we stop them from seeking attention?”

It’s…

🌻 “How can we teach them to ask for connection in a way that works?”

Sunny Says:
Connection isn’t a problem behavior. Sometimes we just need help learning how to ask for it. ☀️🦦

☀️ SUNNY’S SHORTS Episode 5: “She Knows Better.” 🦦

“She knows what she’s supposed to do.”

“She’s done it before.”

“She’s just choosing not to.”

But Sunny wants us to remember something important…

Knowing a skill and being able to use that skill in the moment are two different things.

A person may know how to:

* Ask for a break
* Accept “no”
* Wait
* Transition
* Communicate frustration
* Keep their body safe

…and still struggle to do those things when they’re overwhelmed, frustrated, tired, anxious, or faced with something difficult.

💛 That’s where teaching comes in.

Instead of asking:

❌ “Why are they doing this?”

Try asking:

🌻 “What skill is hard to access right now?”

Behavior support shouldn’t be about proving that someone knows better.

It should be about helping them do better by giving them the skills and support to succeed.

Sunny’s Shorts Episode 4:✨ Sunny had a challenge!

For Sunny, hearing “no” felt really hard. Following directions wasn’t easy either. There were tears, frustration, and moments when he wanted to give up.

But with patience, encouragement, and the right support, those hard moments became opportunities to learn.

Little by little, Sunny learned that “no” doesn’t mean “never,” taking a deep breath can help, and every small success builds confidence for the next challenge.

That’s what ABA should be about—not perfection, but progress.

Every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and believe:
