"Get weerd and feel." Planning the tattoo.

We got a typewriter for our kids to start learning to type this summer away from screens. This is what my 8 year old typed when she sat down this morning. Many of my clients have heard me regale them with tales of the crazy challenge that this child is. There are maybe no 4 words that describe this amazing child more clearly. I'm so lucky to parent her!

The best thing I got to do while off-call was take my biggest kid on his first backpacking trip! We just did one night because my on-call life has kept me from being out there for almost 13 years but it was THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! Hoping for at least 2 more trips this year. So grateful for my dear colleagues Meshell Meshell Orozco and Meredith North Sound Midwifery who can spot me on urgent call coverage so that I can get some time away here and there when I'm off-call for babies. Life on-call 365 days a year is NO JOKE!! Working hard to lean into my baby breaks and make that 365 more like 345-355. Every time I send out the "FYI call my backup if you need something" message, I have a guilt reaction in my body. I know the truth is that I'm a better midwife for them when I take the breaks I need, and I know they feel this way too. But damn it's hard to quiet that voice that tells me I need to be available to everyone, ALWAYS! We're all a work in progress, us humans.

I have had the most luxurious amount of time off-call this Spring!! Now, back on for 2 sweet June babies and then another chunk off in July, what a rare treat! Last week in prep for going back on call, I went through all my bags, checked expiration dates, restocked, updated my stock lists, placed supplies and meds orders, did a huge batch of sterilizing and packed everything back in my car! I really love this part of my work. Feels like such an exhale to feel organized and prepared for babies.

Oops! Super behind on birth announcements again! This birth launched me into the longest off-call window since my maternity leave with Jade! (8 years ago!)

Gosh, the challenge of some labors really takes us all by surprise, 3rd babies can be like that! The craps shoot, as we saym sweet sweet shame was one of those babies, and I just love her even more for it! Born mid-March, weighing 7 , she joined her 2 siblings Nancy and Hank in the same room they were born in, just feet apart from each other! Her mama did such an incredible job stepping into this challenging labor and meeting it with grace and strength. This was the first family I've served throigh 3 babies since Kathy's retirement in 2021 and I just really adore them. Welcome dear one, you are so so loved!
