Genetics may play a bigger role in cavity risk than most people realize.
A 2025 Cornell study found that people with more copies of a gene called AMY1 break down starch more efficiently in their saliva. But that efficiency also feeds more sugar to a certain cavity-causing bacteria. That means two people can have identical brushing habits and still end up with very different cavity risk.
