THE TONGUE TIE

Most people think a tongue tie is only a breastfeeding issue.

It isn’t.

A restrictive tongue tie can influence function for decades.

The tongue is not just a muscle.

It’s a growth guide.
It’s a breathing assistant.
It’s a swallowing organ.
It’s a postural stabiliser.

And it’s connected into a complex network of fascia, muscles, nerves and cranial structures throughout the body.

When the tongue cannot move freely, the effects may extend far beyond the mouth.

A restrictive tongue tie has been associated with:

▪️ Difficulty breastfeeding
▪️ Mouth breathing
▪️ Poor sleep quality
▪️ Swallowing dysfunction
▪️ Speech challenges
▪️ Dental and facial development issues
▪️ Low tongue posture
▪️ Teeth grinding
▪️ Neck and postural compensations

But here’s the important part…
Not everyone with a tongue tie has a problem.
And not every problem is caused by a tongue tie.

The real question isn’t:
“Do they have a tongue tie?”

The real question is:
“Is it affecting function?”

Because a tongue tie diagnosis should never be based on what the tissue looks like.

It should be based on what the tongue can actually do.

That’s why the future of tongue tie care isn’t about chasing anatomy.

It’s about understanding function.

Function first.
