Step 1: I Am Powerless, But He Is Not
Reminder:
I am powerless, but He is not.
Step 1:
“We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Three Common Misconceptions About Recovery
1. Recovery is about willpower alone.
Insight: If willpower were enough, most of us would have stopped long before recovery became necessary.
2. Once sober, all problems disappear.
Insight: Sobriety removes the substance, but recovery is the ongoing process of healing the underlying issues.
3. Asking for help is a sign of weakness.
Insight: It takes far more courage to admit we need help than to continue struggling alone.
Scripture
John 15:5 — “Apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Jesus reminds us that true victory comes through complete dependence on Him, not our own strength.
Discussion Questions
1. What evidence in my life shows that I am powerless over my addiction?
2. How have my own efforts fallen short when I tried to do recovery alone?
3. What would it look like for me to rely on God’s power instead of my own today?
Closing Scripture
Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we do not have to rely on our own strength. Help us to admit our powerlessness, trust in Your power, and depend on You one day at a time. Strengthen us in our recovery and guide our steps according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
