October 8th is National Dyslexia Day!
What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by differences in brain wiring. It is a lifelong condition, and while there is no cure, individuals can use various coping strategies to manage it. Characteristics of dyslexia include difficulties in word reading and spelling, affecting both speed and accuracy. As a speech-language pathologist (SLP), it is essential to focus on developing phonological skills, morphological processing, and literacy targets. Additionally, challenges with reading comprehension, along with limited reading and writing experiences, can hinder growth in language development, knowledge acquisition, written expression, and overall academic achievement.

Dear ENMU Family,

It is with profound sadness that we report the September 23, 2026, passing of former CDIS instructor Mr. Jesse “Jay” Martin. Mr. Martin first came to ENMU as a student in 1993, earning his Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders, followed by a master’s degree. In 2015, he joined the faculty as an instructor and Clinical Supervisor, where he was beloved by students and faculty alike.

In 2022, Mr. Martin retired from the University shortly after celebrating his 80th birthday. He then moved to Albuquerque to be close to family and quickly became involved in his retirement community. His former colleagues have fondly reported that he enjoyed playing bridge and being the life of the party.

Services are pending.

Please join me in extending heartfelt condolences to the Martin family.

James Johnston, PhD
President
