It’s graduation season!

Grads, I see you…
With your hopes and dreams
Saying a whole lot of goodbyes in sessions
With a large helping of seniorities
Holding excitement and worry at the same time
Living in the land of comparison again, just like internship but this time with real paying jobs.

I see those of you ready for private practice and those of you who think you’re definitely not ready for private practice.
And those who have no idea what’s next and what’s best. And I see the fear there for you too.

I see you trying to prioritize money or supervision or client hours or types of clients or work hours or location. So many ors.

I see you ready to be done with all the classes and papers and required reading and also scared to not have all the support you do now.

I see you ready to see your family at graduation as you walk across the stage. I also see you not coming to graduation because you don’t have anyone to celebrate you.

I see you grads and all you carry and hold. Fear and anticipation. Dread and can’t wait for. All the both/ands of this season.

Couples intensive day!

I chatted with a colleague over the lunch break and she asked how it was going.

I gave her two answers, how I am doing and how the session is going. These are important distinctions as we assess how a session goes (especially a 5-7 hour couples intensive!)

Sometimes we can do really good work and show up in our best self and the session doesn’t go well. Learning what’s mine and what’s the clients has been a learning process and I’m thankful to see those as different assessments.

Practicing attunement to couples by watching tv show and movie clips with no sound.

SO MUCH of what is said by people in couples therapy is done so without any words at all.

Good therapy listens to the words AND the body cues.
