Had the opportunity to talk with an EMR class this week (and an EMT class in April) about the acute and prolonged effects trauma exposure can have on First Responders mentally/emotionally/physically, along with stigma & barriers to seeking help, how it affects relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and their capacity to keep doing the job!
They learned about treatment options, resources, and coping skills that can help heal the negative effects from trauma exposure so they can be mentally fit/well, and in turn, have a better quality of life now and in the future!
I love doing this work!!! Thank you for inviting me to your class!
Oh….. as you can see, I had to pass some pretty strict standards with the ‘class supervisor’ before stepping foot inside the room 🐶 🐾 🥰

Four chemicals do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to feeling good, and none of them require a doctor.

Dopamine is the reward one. It fires when you finish something, so checking a task off a list, dancing to a song you love, or treating yourself after real work all give you a hit of it.

Serotonin is the mood stabilizer. Fifteen minutes of sunlight or standing in the morning sun does more than you'd expect, and so does a few quiet minutes of meditation with slow, deep breathing.

Oxytocin is the one that shows up when you feel close to someone. You don't need a romantic partner for it. Hugging a friend, cuddling a pet, or belonging to a community, a book club, a volunteer group, a fitness class, all bring it up.

Endorphins are your body's natural painkillers, released in response to stress and pain to leave you feeling steadier. Moving your body is the fastest way to reach them. Laughing at something genuinely funny works too.

None of it is a cure, and none of it replaces care you actually need. But the levers are closer than you think, and most days you can pull a few of them yourself.
