Insurance BS: peer to peer discussions

Here, an ENT is trying to get a procedure that is medically indicated for his patient. He is on the phone with an ENT who works as a medical reviewer for an insurance company.

Both ENTs agree that this patient qualifies for the procedure due to the frequency of symptoms that the patient has, and this is supported by ENT society guidelines. However, the insurance company has made up their own policy on when they will allow patients to have this procedure. Ultimately, the patient's procedure is denied based on arbitrary rules that the insurance company made up.

By denying necessary care, these companies are practicing medicine without a medical license.

In the US, patients are frequently unable to access care that they need, despite having insurance, because a corporation decided it wants to keep its profits up by not paying for it, while continuing to take money from patients by way of premiums.

Our healthcare system needs a complete overhaul, starting with these parasitic insurance companies.

Spoiler: it's United Healthcare. They require a referral from PCPs even for patients who have a PPO plan. We all are not angry enough at these insurance companies.

It doesn’t have to be this way (and it shouldn’t be)

This absurdity happens all the time. Insurance companies should not be allowed to dictate care (changing a screening colonoscopy to a diagnostic colonoscopy just to avoid paying for it). Hospitals should not be allowed to charge facility fees for the clinics/outpatient surgery centers, just because the hospital owns them.
