Alano Club of Portland A welcome, compassionate and accessible recovery center!

The Alano Club of Portland has been a leading source of recovery support in our community for 60 years and counting. In addition to over 100 weekly mutual aid support meetings, the Alano Club offers other recovery resources, like weekly recovery yoga and mindful meditation classes, monthly seminars on topics like brain chemistry and addiction, relationships in recovery, and regular workshops on topics ranging from recovery advocacy to mindful-based relapse prevention. The Alano Club also hosts large-scale sober social events, like our Recovery Art Walk, Recovery Talent Show and holiday community dinners. What We Do:
By owning and operating a beautiful, historic community center that hosts the largest and most diverse offering of mutual-aid support meetings and recovery services in Oregon, the Alano Club of Portland is able to bring healing, hope and solutions to more than 10,000 visitors each month. There’s no other recovery support center of its kind in the area, where recovering individuals can go—free of charge—to receive the level of life-long support they need in their journey to addiction recovery. Ours is a safe, loving and inviting home for more than 100 weekly recovery support meetings, recovery seminars and workshops, yoga and meditation classes, sobriety-based social events, information and referral services for treatment resources, and holiday celebrations for the recovery community. Who We Help
We serve thousands of recovering men, women and families across 20 distinct mutual aid programs, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon family groups, Gamblers Anonymous, Food Addicts Anonymous, Wellbriety, Refuge Recovery and nearly everything in between!

During National Recovery Month, the Alano Club of Portland partnered with some of our favorite restaurants to raise awareness and support for recovery and overdose prevention resources.

This year, with the help of our partners, we raised $4,800 for recovery services, marking our most successful Restaurants for Recovery campaign yet!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this possible.

Join us in the Loft on October 20th for a panel discussion about dating in sobriety!

Hailey Hosler—longtime friend of the Club and co-chair of Ben’s Friends, the recovery non-profit for people in the food and hospitality industries—will be joined by a group of panelists every month to discuss the intricacies, lessons, and unique challenges of sober living. Each session will focus on a topic or intersecting field, opening the floor to share about the parts of sobriety that get left out of recovery meetings. To kick things off, Hailey and her panelists will dive into the thing you’re not supposed to do, but everyone does: dating.

In this training, led by Diverge and created in collaboration with people currently impacted by houselessness and neurodivergence, we’ll collectively increase our capacity to understand, empathize, and better involve community members living with disability.

With a focus on improving how we respond to people in our community impacted by neurodivergence and houselessness, we’ll learn about how to implement neuro-accessible communication practices. Through these skills, we will see how implementing accessibility in our daily lives can improve our capacity to respond to houselessness in our community.

Registration is required to participate! Find the link in our stories and bio.

Friends,

Some of you may know, some of you may not, but it’s been an especially “busy” week at the Club.

In the span of four days, our staff has handled two overdoses, a situation in which a member of our staff and a first responder were physically assaulted (as part of an incredibly volatile incident in which the person in question attempted to flee the scene by crashing their car into an ambulance) and earlier tonight, an incident in which our staff needed to clean up regurgitation from an individual, which covered the bathroom floor and a not insubstantial part of the (new) carpeting.
An Executive Director’s role means many things and, at least for me, one of those things is ensuring that our staff is safe, protected, and cared for. As such, I have made the decision to close the Alano Club for one day — Monday, September 28th — so that our staff has a moment to catch their collective breath after an especially taxing week. This is not a decision I take lightly. I understand it impacts your meetings; I understand it impacts the community. We will reopen with normal hours Tuesday, September 29th.

Our staff is made up of a small group of enormously passionate, dedicated people who also have their own personal recovery to tend to. I am making sure each and all of them have an extra day to do that this week. If there is community objection to that, I truly apologize but we have to care for each other — it is fundamental to our recovery, to our organization, and to our community. This is how I’ve chosen to care for our staff at Alano. I appreciate your understanding.

Feel free to reach out with any questions. [email protected]

In hope and gratitude,

Kasey

Join us on Sunday, September 20th, in partership with Heart Core Healing, for a Breathwork and Soundhealing workshop at the Alano Club.

Mental health experts have long studied the benefits of breathwork and sound healing, particularly their effectiveness in treating trauma, substance use and other addictive disorders, through somatic cognitive rewiring. Here, you will be introduced to both modalities.
