What you need to know about p**ping during pregnancy & postpartum
(from a physical therapist who specializes in birth & pelvic floor)

Constipation is EXTREMELY common, but it’s not something you should just “deal with”
Hormones, pressure from the growing uterus, iron supplements, dehydration, stress, and pelvic floor tension all play a role.

DO NOT STRAIN (please?)
Repeated straining increases pressure on the pelvic floor and can contribute to hemorrhoids, prolapse symptoms, pain, and difficulty healing postpartum. You don’t want this🙅‍♀️

Your pelvic floor HAS to relax...to p**p
A lot of people think only about strengthening, but bowel movements require coordination and release.

Breathing changes everything
Holding your breath or pushing hard creates downward pressure. Proper breathing mechanics help your pelvic floor and abdominal system work together.

Position matters
Elevating your feet (like with a small stool or Squatty Potty), leaning forward slightly, and relaxing your jaw can make bowel movements easier and less straining.

Hydration + fiber help, but they’re not *always* the whole answer
Sometimes the issue is muscular tension, nervous system stress, or fear around pain after birth.

Yep, your nervous system affects your bowels, too.
Stress and a constantly activated nervous system can slow digestion and make your body more guarded.

If you’re avoiding going because you’re scared it will hurt...just know, we’ve ALL been there.
You are NOT dramatic.

Wanna talk about this super fun subject (and more, I promise😅), we’re hosting Birth Prep, But Better, a class locally in-person in the Portland, OR, area that actually prepares you for what birth (yep, even the toughest situations) and early postpartum can feel like.

🗓 May 30 | 9am–12pm (tomorrow!!)

I am SO excited to share that I will be presenting at Northwest Regionals to early intervention providers on the NICU to home transition!

Before founding Be Well Baby, I worked in the NICU and watched families walk out the door without the support they needed. That experience changed everything for me. It is literally the reason I do what I do. 💫

Getting to bring this content to early intervention providers is something I have genuinely dreamed about. Early intervention providers have the power to change the entire trajectory of a child’s life and I cannot WAIT to pour everything I know into this room. 🙌✨

If you are an EI provider I am talking to YOU! 👇 Drop a 🌿 in the comments if you work with NICU families!

Episode 32 is here and this one is personal 🌿✨

My doula Alison Akan of the BirthLinked YouTube channel flipped the script and interviewed ME about all three of my birth experiences… and nothing was off limits 👀

We talk home birth transfers, surrendering in labor, why knowing too much can work against you, and yes 😅 bacterial vaginosis, cervical lips, and nuchal cords all make an appearance.

Alison has supported over 300 births and brings a reverence to this work that is truly unmatched 🤍 Her mission is for every parent to look back on their birth feeling empowered, even when it didn't go as planned 💛

This episode is for anyone who thought they had birth totally figured out… and then life happened 🙃

If your baby favors one side, holds a “C” shape, or always looks in the same direction, we pay attention.

Not because something is “”wrong””, but it tells us how their body is organizing.

Here’s what we do:
• Look at the WHOLE pattern
Not just the head. We assess the neck, spine, ribs, pelvis, and how everything is working together.

• Assess movement, not just position
Can they turn both ways?
How do they respond when we gently guide them?
Where does movement stop or feel effortful?

• Check feeding + daily habits
Feeding positions, sleep setup, and how they’re held all influence these patterns.

• Use gentle, hands-on support
Craniosacral therapy and soft tissue work can help reduce underlying tension so the body has more options.

• Guide you at home
Simple positioning, carrying, and play strategies that fit into your day, nothing complicated or rigid WE PROMISE.

Because when they can move more freely, EVERYTHING that matters gets easier:
feeding
settling
rolling
reaching

Early patterns are very adaptable, and much less evasive than if they needed to be addressed later in life.

If you’re noticing patterns like this in YOUR baby, skip the line and discomfort at the doctor’s office and schedule an appointment with us!

Have you ever fallen into bed completely exhausted, only to lie there wide awake, running through everything you forgot to do, respond to, or organize? 😩

That bone-tired exhaustion that won't let you rest? There's actually a name for what's happening, and this week's guest coined it 👇

Stassi Chaillé is a feminist therapist trained at Columbia University in systemic oppression and how systems impact mental health across all identities. She focuses specifically on women's mental health and has coined the term system keeping™ to describe something that mental load and emotional labor don't quite capture 🌿

By the end of this conversation, you will see your life differently. We promise 🤍
