Technically, everyone has hemorrhoids, which are just small beds of tissue that contain a lot of blood vessels, either inside the re**um or outside, around the a**s. When we say someone “has hemorrhoids,” we mean that these tissues are swelling and causing symptoms.

Hemorrhoids may be uncomfortable to talk about, but they’re more uncomfortable to live with. Many people live with itching and bleeding when they don’t have to — there could be a very simple solution. Or there could be other things going on — things that could and should be treated.

Albert Khine, M.D., a gastroenterologist at The Portland Clinic, explains how more fiber, a posture change, and a banding procedure can help prevent and treat hemorrhoids. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4gPQXjf

Caring for an aging loved one can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. While caregiving is a big responsibility to manage, you don't have to do it alone.

Katie Koehler Esser, LCSW, one of our behavioral health providers, talks about the reality of caregiving and the importance of not losing sight of yourself when caring for someone else. She shares valuable resources to help connect you with support available through your community, those closest to you, and organizations that can assist you in finding local services and additional assistance.

At The Portland Clinic, we have a team of professionals who can help with both the practical and emotional challenges of providing elder care. We're here to lighten the load. Read more about elder caregiving: https://bit.ly/4wkw8RV

Protect your skin by making sunscreen part of your routine. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, apply it 15 minutes before heading outdoors, and reapply every 2 hours—or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

Anyone whose activities put their shinbones through repeated pounding, especially on hard surfaces — sorry to all you runners out there — is at risk of shin splints. This common stress injury announces itself as pain along the front of the tibia — the lower leg bone that we call the shin.

Andrea Mulligan, DPT, a physical therapist at The Portland Clinic, identifies common causes of shin splints, what to do if you think you have them and how to prevent them. If you're experiencing shin pain, we're here to help you maintain your strength and modify your routine to get you back to the sports and activities you enjoy. Why is it that one person can eat 4,000 calories a day and never gain a pound, while another can eat less than 1,200 and still experience weight gain? Much of it has to do with metabolism. It’s a common misunderstanding that you’re stuck — or blessed — with the metabolism that you have. It is not static. It fluctuates with age and hormone levels, and you can change it by making changes in your body composition, diet, activity level and other parts of your life. For good health and weight management, it pays to learn more about metabolism in general, and about yours specifically. Our nutrition team explains metabolism, which key factors have a big influence on your metabolic rate and energy expenditure, and 9 ways you can optimize your metabolism: https://bit.ly/4w4AwEa
