"Health coaching is effective."

"Just as a sports coach can help an athlete develop and excel at a sport, a health and wellness coach can help anyone excel at living their life, even--or especially--if they have chronic medical conditions."

"People tend to hire health coaches to help them with a broad variety of health issues, such as weight loss, stress reduction, the management of chronic conditions, improving diet and exercise, to***co cessation, addiction, and adjusting to a life-altering health event, like a heart attack."

"Whereas traditional psychology has focused on what is 'wrong' with people and what needs to be 'fixed,' coaching philosophy focuses on what has, can, and will work better for you. This means that instead of rooting around for problems to dwell on, a coach will work with you to harness your strengths, in order to improve the health behaviors you want to address."

"Coaching is effective for people managing a variety of health conditions. According to a recent study, coaching 'results in clinically relevant improvements in multiple biomarker risk factors (including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness) in diverse populations.'"

"Unlike health fads that come and go, health coaching has strong evidence behind it backing its effectiveness for improving health and well-being."

"Health coaches could be that overlooked but essential part of the equation, when we consider how other roles can support and supplement doctors."

"Instead of a one-way health advice that might go in one ear and out the other because it tends not to be person-centric, health coaching is more similar to talk therapy or counselling. Health coaches aim to build a sense of trust and rapport and understand the psychosocial, economic and familial context behind our health decisions."

"Evidence for health coaching’s positive effects has been demonstrated in research, including improved weight management, promoting physical activity, and better mental and physical health status for adults with chronic diseases coupled with medication adherence.

Health coaching appears promising in its ability to sustain long-term behaviour change and should be more widely adopted in Singapore's approach to health promotion and disease prevention, beyond their current presence in SportSG's Active Health initiative.

One way could be for general practitioners (GPs) to refer patients to a pool of health coaches who would serve as the bridge between patients and doctors. Health coaches could check in on patients more regularly than the months between medical check-ups and report back on progress."

Knowing why and how we should lead a healthier lifestyle isn't enough when it comes to preventive health. Health coaches can support the ambitious goal of Healthier SG, say Tina Ng and Susan Tan from the Society of Behavioural Health, Singapore.

"Maintaining a healthy BMI can lengthen your life by more than a decade, a 2018 study found, and has been linked with a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and cancer. Regular physical activity and eating healthy foods can help you with this goal."

"People who sleep less than seven hours nightly tend to have higher levels of stress hormones, blood sugar and blood pressure, Goldberg said."

"Avoiding too much alcohol can add at least several years to your life by lowering your risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other chronic diseases, a 2020 study found."

"Having close, positive relationships adds happiness and comfort to our lives and reduces stress, experts have said. Studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends and community have fewer health problems, live longer and experience less depression and cognitive decline later in life, according to Harvard Health."

"With even a small weight gain, there is a significant increase in the overall risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke."

"While a couple of pounds here or there may not seem life threatening, these findings suggest that even a few pounds in key areas like the belly can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which opens you up to a slew of heart health risks."

"The effects of chronic high blood pressure can be extreme, including damage to the heart and arteries, stroke, kidney damage, vision loss, erectile dysfunction, and more, according to the American Heart Association."

"I decided to quit because I’m tired of feeling so restricted. I want to be able to eat 'normally, especially at social gatherings."

"I've been calorie counting for a couple of months now, but I don't really work out. This isn't my first rodeo, but I'm giving it a try again even though dieting mostly ends up in frustration and disappointment."

"I was obsessed with counting carbs and weighing food at first, but I've realized that was a waste of time."

"Dieting can become dangerous very easily."

"I spent years dieting and obsessively working out because I wanted to lose weight and look the way I imagine in my head. However, pressure to follow a restrictive diet and exercise plan has been detrimental to my mental and physical health."

"Diet culture is so negative. I have co-workers who are constantly dieting. None of them are what I would consider overweight, and most are skinny if anything.

My aunt almost killed herself trying to lose weight before finally agreeing to try weight loss surgery. The whole thing is just overwhelming and sad."

"The impact on both my mental and physical health was extremely detrimental. I definitely lost weight on my diet. I think at my lightest I was a little over 150 pounds. But it was unsustainable.

I was constantly hungry and constantly thinking about food. I weighed myself multiple times a day and would feel really ashamed when I had gained weight, or when I didn't think I’d lost enough. I always had mental health issues, but they were especially bad during that time.

Physically, I was extremely tired and weak. When I inevitably quit, I gained all the weight back, plus some."

"I lost energy, had fainting spells, and was afraid of food. It significantly decreased my mental health.

I knew it came from a complicated place in my mind. I needed to be thin more than anything and never lost a substantial amount of weight because, despite my intense calorie restriction, my metabolism had slowed to a point where weight loss just wasn’t happening."

How does diet culture affect the way we eat and feel in our bodies? When it comes to having a relationship with food, diet culture can affect the health of our body and mind. Here’s how 10 women were affected by dieting and how they found empowerment in themselves instead.

"Getting good sleep can play a role in supporting your heart and overall health--and maybe even how long you live-according to new research being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session Together with the World Congress of Cardiology. The study found that young people who have more beneficial sleep habits are incrementally less likely to die early. Moreover, the data suggest that about 8% of deaths from any cause could be attributed to poor sleep patterns."
