October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. This month, let’s raise awareness, encourage regular breast cancer screening, and support those affected by breast cancer. Early detection can make a difference. Talk with your healthcare provider about your risk and when breast cancer screening is right for you. Together, we can spread awareness, support one another, and promote better health for our community.

Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Zhongqiu Jie (中秋节) in Chinese, is also called the Mooncake Festival or the Moon Festival. As the second most important holiday in Asian Countries after the Lunar New Year, it’s a time to honor the moon, express gratitude, and celebrate family reunions. In 2026, the festival falls on September 25, marking a special moment for togetherness and reflection. This year, AHSC’s Mandarin groups celebrated this meaningful tradition through two heartwarming gatherings filled with joy, culture, and connection.

On September 16, our Beaverton group came together at Luke’s Noodle House for a delightful luncheon. Nearly 60 community members joined in, sharing laughter, delicious food, and warm conversation.

On September 24, the Portland group hosted a lively cultural showcase featuring 13 wonderful performances. Over 70 participants sang, danced, and shone in colorful costumes before an audience of more than 200 attendees — creating an unforgettable morning of unity and celebration.
The AHSC Portland Mandarin Senior Group welcomes community members to join our Portland and Beaverton gatherings to stay active, connected, and inspired.

On Monday, September 28, 2026, the Asian Health & Service Center (AHSC) was grateful to partner once again with Providence Cancer Institute to provide free cancer screenings and risk assessments for Cantonese-, Mandarin-, Korean-, and Vietnamese-speaking community members.

This collaborative event aimed to provide free health assessments, cancer screenings, and cancer prevention education to Asian community members, particularly those who may face barriers to accessing preventive care. Through this initiative, AHSC and Providence sought to help community members identify potential health risks early and access appropriate follow-up care and medical services.

A total of 68 community members were served, with 132 screenings completed across two screening stations, including lung cancer risk assessments and oral, head, and neck cancer screenings. The event also provided follow-up recommendations and support to relevant medical services.

The event was made possible by a dedicated team of 53 staff and volunteer, including 21 AHSC staff members, 15 Providence staff members (including 8 physicians), and 17 AHSC volunteers.

A special thank you to our valued partners at Providence Cancer Institute(FINISHCANCER) for your continued collaboration and commitment to making quality healthcare more accessible to our community. Together, Through Love & Kindness, We !

A little friendly competition and a lot of Chusuk joy! AHSC celebrated our Korean Chusuk celebration with a total of 215 participants at our Portland Healthy Friends Club on September 23rd and Beaverton Healthy Friends Club on September 11th. With so many friends together, there was plenty of laughter and cheering to go around! This year’s activities included Chusuk bingo, traditional Chusuk table contest, and Korean pancake contest. The members cheered each other on and enjoyed a little friendly competition on who could set up a formal traditional Chusuk table to remember our ancestors. Between the games and familiar holiday traditions, there were plenty of reasons to smile and enjoy all the activities, including a hearty Korean traditional bibimbap meal and an amazing line dancing performance. A special thanks to the Korean Catholic Church and all the support from the AHSC staff, volunteers, and community group members who helped to make this Chusuk celebration even more abundant and special. Thank you and being all together is what makes the holiday so special!

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) The Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) is a cherished tradition in Vietnamese culture. It is a special time for families and communities to come together and celebrate the beauty of the full moon, which is traditionally believed to be at its brightest and roundest on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. The festival is a time for gathering with loved ones, enjoying colorful lanterns, sharing mooncakes, and honoring traditions that bring warmth, happiness, and connection across generations. On September 17, 2026, our Vietnamese community came together to celebrate this special festival with laughter, music, and togetherness. A total of 140 clients participated in the celebration, filling the room with joy and excitement. The morning began with light exercises to energize everyone and get the celebration started. This was followed by an outstanding performance by the Mulan Drum Team. Our Vietnamese community members thoroughly enjoyed the team's energetic and professional performance and expressed their appreciation for the wonderful presentation. Following the performance, each participant received a traditional mooncake to celebrate the occasion and honor this meaningful Vietnamese tradition. It was a joyful and memorable celebration that brought our community together and created a wonderful opportunity to share Vietnamese culture and traditions with everyone. Would you like to join us for our weekly community gatherings? Come connect with others, enjoy fun activities, and be part of our community! Contact us at 503-772-5892.

Bridging the Silence | Edward’s Story – Korean
For many people in Asian communities, talking about mental and emotional health can be difficult. We may learn to keep our struggles private, stay strong, and smile even when we are hurting. Sharing what we are going through or asking for help may not always feel like an option.

But staying silent does not make the pain disappear.
In 2025, Asian Health & Service Center (AHSC) hosted Bridging the Silence, inviting community members to share their lived experiences and help bring conversations about mental health into the open.

Today, we invite you to listen to Edward’s story, shared in Korean.
Every story shared can help make it a little easier for someone else to speak. Your voice matters. Your story matters.

For more information on promoting well-being and caring for our mental health needs, please feel free to contact our behavioral health language line. Our bilingual therapists are available to help Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Bridging the Silence | WeiLi’s Story – Mandarin
Emotional struggles are not always easy to see.
Someone may smile, go to work, spend time with family and friends, and appear to be doing well while quietly carrying sadness, stress, fear, or other struggles inside.

That is why listening to one another matters.
As we continue AHSC’s Bridging the Silence video series, we invite you to listen to WeiLi’s story, shared in Mandarin. By creating a space where people feel safe to talk and others are willing to listen, we can help bring mental health conversations out of silence.

Sometimes, simply knowing that someone is listening can make a difference. Listen with kindness. Speak without fear.

For more information on promoting well-being and caring for our mental health needs, please feel free to contact our behavioral health language line. Our bilingual therapists are available to help Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
